MSI Global GT60 Dominator Pro – In 500 Words

Ever since Apple introduced the MacBook Pro with Retina display, most laptop makers are trying to bring laptops with higher than 1080p displays, but MSI might be the first one to introduce a gaming laptop with an ultrahigh resolution display. MSI Global GT60 Dominator Pro is a gaming laptop with a price tag of $2299 and features the latest and fastest hardware available in the market.

MSI Global GT60 Dominator pro features a mediocre and generic design. The body is mostly made from good quality plastic and aluminum with glossy black finish, plastic chrome accents and a few red lines. The ultrahigh resolution display of GT60 Dominator Pro is what makes it superior to other gaming notebooks. It features a 15.6-inch IPS display with a resolution of 2880×1620 pixels, providing 213 pixels per inch. The 3k display is gorgeous to look at and eye candy for hardcore gamers. It can render 94% of the sRGB gamut with maximum contrast ratio and brightness of 650:1 and 273 lux, respectively.

Below the gorgeous display, it features a large backlit keyboard with island style keys. The multi-colored backlighting can be customized by the users according to their taste. Below the keyboard is a multi-touch trackpad with Windows 8.1 gesture support. GT60 Dominator Pro comes with a variety of I/O ports including three USB 3.0 ports, one USB 2.0 port, Ethernet port, HDMI port and two DisplayPort connections. It also features Bluetooth 4.0 and 802.11n Wi-Fi for wireless connectivity. It also comes equipped with a pair of DynAudio speakers, which are loud enough to fill a large room without any distortion.

GT60 Dominator Pro is powered by Intel Core i7-4800MQ processor with 6MB cache and Intel HD Graphics 4600. The processor belongs to Intel’s latest Haswell series of processors and is clocked at 2.7GHz with turbo boost of up to 3.7GHz. It comes with 16GB of RAM and a 128GB solid-state drive for faster loading time along with 1TB mechanical hard disk for storage. It also features a non-removable 7800 mAh Lithium Ion 9-cell battery which lasted only 1 hour 30 min under normal usage and a little over one hour while gaming. The low battery life is mostly due to its ultrahigh resolution display.

GT60 Dominator Pro is equipped with Nvidia GTX 880M, which is the latest and fastest discreet GPU by the company. The GPU has 8GB of GDDR5 memory and it can run all the latest games without breaking a sweat. The laptop scored 115.16 points in SiSoft Sandra’s Processor Arithmetic test. With its GTX 880M, GT60 Dominator Pro scored 5362 and 17500 in 3DMark’s Fire Strike and Cloud Gate Benchmark tests, respectively. At its native resolution the laptop managed to run Battlefield 4 at Ultra settings with playable frames. With its potent hardware, GT60 Dominator Pro can hold its own against the likes of Alienware 17 and Origin EON17-S.

GT60 Dominator Pro is not perfect and comes with its own set of problems, like while gaming the fan noise becomes too loud and the laptop starts heating up. The 3k display is gorgeous to look at but it causes performance issues as GPU’s workload is greatly increased while gaming at ultrahigh resolution. Still with its flashy design, majestic display and impressive hardware, MSI Global GT60 Dominator Pro is one of the best mid-range gaming laptops available in the market.
