Android Marshmallow Update für freigeschaltetes HTC One M8 veröffentlicht, Unternehmen hält sein Wort

HTC’s Mo Versi took to Twitter on Wednesday to announce some Android Marshmallow goodness for some HTC One M8 owners: “HTC One (M8) unlocked owners! Great news, all testing has been complete and the update for Marshmallow will be sent out within 24 hours. Thx”

Versi’s message was posted at 12:30PM that afternoon. On Thursday, yesterday, HTC released the update for One M8 owners, keeping its word to the owners in question. The catch here, though, is that the Android Marshmallow update has been released for unlocked One M8 owners. In other words, if you have a carrier-locked HTC One M8, it will take some while before you see the new Android Marshmallow update. T-Mobile, for instance, didn’t release the Android Marshmallow update for the Nexus 6 until six weeks after it’s release from Google — so HTC One M8 owners with AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, and Sprint may need to wait until six more weeks before receiving the Marshmallow update (that’s a generous estimate, by the way).

The unlocked HTC One M8 Android Marshmallow update is over 1GB large in size (1.03GB, to be precise) and brings Doze, Google Now On Tap, customizable app permissions, Android Pay, an alphabetical app slide adjuster, along with the usual bug fixes and enhancements. Even as HTC releases Marshmallow for the unlocked One M8, Google has already released Android 6.0.1 for the Cherry Mobile G1, an Android One device, in the Philippines.

The One M8’s reception of Android Marshmallow ahead of the HTC One M9 is interesting, indeed. Samsung seems to have a more interesting policy with regard to updating its devices: sometimes the company releases updates for older devices first, sometimes newer devices. The Galaxy S5 received Android 5.0 Lollipop before even the Galaxy Note 4, but now the Note 4 has received 5.1.1 Lollipop ahead of the S5 (which is still waiting for the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update).

HTC One M8 Developer Edition devices are also receiving the update. We’ll be back to report on carrier-locked HTC One M8 models that receive the Marshmallow update in the coming days, weeks, and months.

If you’ve received the Android Marshmallow update on your One M8, feel free to write in and let us know.
