The Galaxy S7 is on the way; this is no surprise. And, as usual, when the dust settles around the specs and features, the question on most consumers’ minds is, “when can I get my hands on the Galaxy S7?” Well, questions about the Galaxy S7 release date may be answered as of now, if the latest tweet from a renown leakster can be esteemed highly.

Evan Blass, a.k.a. @evleaks, posted the following just a few days ago: “Starting to look like a Friday, March 11th Galaxy release in the U.S.”

Since the Galaxy S7 is the upcoming Galaxy smartphone (and the S7 is the name of the collection that includes the Galaxy S7 Edge and the Galaxy S7 Edge Plus), Evan Blass’s comment on Twitter is all about the Galaxy S7. What we now have as a strong rumor is the release of the Galaxy S7 on March 11th in the US. Friday is often a release date of smartphones in the US, so the rumor makes sense for the Galaxy S7 release date.

As for the rumor of the Galaxy S7 release date, there are a few reasons as to why March 11th makes perfect timing. First, Samsung intends to unveil the Galaxy S7 at Mobile World Congress (or MWC) at the end of February, giving the Galaxy S7 release date a two-week breathing time before the Korean giant rolls out the next-generation Galaxy to the consumer market. The same happened with Samsung’s Galaxy Note 5 announcement (August 13th) and the phone’s subsequent release about a week and a half after the unveil. It wouldn’t be uncharacteristic, knowing Samsung’s latest trend of unveiling smartphones earlier than normal (the Galaxy Note 5 unveil in August instead of September, the traditional unveil month).

Next, the Galaxy S7 release date makes sense because Samsung wants to challenge Apple again in the earlier part of the year. Samsung’s Gear S2 smartwatch outsold the Apple Watch at Best Buy over the Christmas season, in large part because the smartwatch was unveiled at the US in October and was slightly discounted around the holidays. If Samsung can get the Galaxy S7 (and perhaps the SM-R150 fitness tracker) out to the consumer market around March 11th instead of the usual April 10th-11th release date, then the Galaxy S7 will see an excellent discount around the summertime — before the Galaxy Note 6 is released in the fall of the year.

Evan Blass does have a mixed track record with updates, as some have noted, but from the Galaxy Note 5 announcement in August and Samsung’s desire to have some war with the upcoming first-generation Apple Watch refresh (the inclusion of a FaceTime camera and some new Apple Watch bands), Samsung will likely prepare the Galaxy S7 for the battle. Additionally, bringing out the SM-R150 fitness tracker that we’ve been seeing that appears to be a “Gear S2 Sport” edition on the same day as the Galaxy S7 release date would only add to the excitement.

From what we know, the Galaxy S7 will feature a 5.1-inch, Quad HD display with a 2,560 x 1,440p screen resolution, a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM, a 3,000mAh battery with 32GB and 64GB of onboard storage with a microSD card slot for expandable/internal storage. The Galaxy S7 Edge looks to feature a 5.5-inch display, as the Zauba shipping document revealed some days ago, with the same specs and features except for a 3,600mAh battery (surpassing the 3,500mAh battery of the Galaxy S6 Active). The Galaxy S7 Edge Plus looks to have a 5.7-inch display, which will remain unchanged from 2015’s Galaxy S6 Edge Plus (edge+). The Galaxy S7, S7 Edge, and S7 Edge Plus will all feature water and dust resistance and microSD card slots. With the inclusion of native SD card support within Android Marshmallow, the microSD card (sold separately, of course) can now become internal storage for the device — meaning that you could save literally any app on the microSD card, as opposed to the days of old where you could only use the SD storage for a few apps and mostly videos and photos.

March 11th is only a month shy of April 11th, making this rumor believable. As always, it’s best to take the Galaxy S7 release date supplied here as probable, not as something set in stone. It’s never set in stone until Samsung says so.
