TELUS Canada posts Android Marshmallow release date, then pulls it

We’ve seen too many leaks regarding the new LG Nexus 5X and Huawei Nexus 6P to think that it’s all a big joke. Well, it seems that a new Android Marshmallow sighting adds to the idea that Google is soon two unveil two new Nexus smartphones.

The Android Marshmallow sighting comes from Canada carrier TELUS, who recently updated its software release log to include the new Android update. The release log mentions the Nexus 6 (2014) and the Nexus 5 (2013), with “Android M” under “related information.” The target launch date listed on the log was “October 5th,” pointing to a few days after what has been rumored to be Google’s Nexus event.

It seems likely that Google would release Android Marshmallow (abbreviated as “Android M”) just a few days after announcing the new LG Nexus 5X and Huawei Nexus 6P (September 29th). And, as the tradition goes, after announcing a new update, Google releases its latest update for current devices. In this case, the 2014 Nexus 6 and 2013 Nexus 5 will get the Android Marshmallow update. Google’s Nexus devices receive the latest Android updates before any other Android users, with Motorola having been the only company to compete with the early Nexus tradition in recent years.

After shortly updating its release log, however, TELUS pulled the update release information for the Nexus 5 and Nexus 6 (apparently due to the unwanted attention about Google’s latest). It could be the case that Google is still debating the September 29th unveil, but it could simply be the case that Google wants to announce the Android Marshmallow release date on stage at the unveil. For all we know, Android Marshmallow could be released earlier than October 5th. Since Google is an American company, Nexus owners in the US could see the arrival of Marshmallow earlier than October 5th.

Android Marshmallow is known formally as Android 6.0, with Android 5.0 having been last year’s Android Lollipop update. Google’s updates are named after desserts, with Cupcake, Doughnut, Éclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean, KitKat, and Lollipop all preceding the upcoming update.
