Nexus 6P, aka Huawei Nexus, will have a 128GB storage option; it won’t come cheap

The Huawei Nexus finally has a name as the upcoming Nexus 6P, and it’s a good thing for vanilla Android fans looking to get the best of Google at month’s end. But, you know how the news train goes: as the time draws nearer, more and more details arrive regarding questions we’ve wanted to know for months that have remained under wraps. Well, another piece of the Nexus 6P puzzle has arrived: info about storage options.

Google’s Motorola Nexus 6 had 32GB and 64GB storage options, but nothing more (and no expandable storage). With the Nexus 6P, though, we’ve learned something that may separate the Huawei Nexus from the Nexus 5X (LG Nexus): that is, that the former may have a more expensive 128GB storage model.

The Nexus 6P would make Nexus history, becoming the first Nexus to officially offer the high storage option; then again, we think Google is doing this to make the Nexus 6P the true flagship contender to take on the Samsung Galaxy Note5 and Apple iPhone 6s Plus. What the Nexus 6P new storage model also indicates, however, is that Google is not yet releasing its grip on cloud storage. So many look at Google’s decision to natively support microSD cards in Android Marshmallow and wonder, “Why Now?,” but the answer’s not hard to see: so many Android consumers purchase mid-range and low-end models that still provide expandable storage to help smartphone prices remain quite budget-friendly.

At the same time, it’s not an admission that Google ever intends to implement microSD support in its own Nexus devices. Why do that, when consumers can always pay more money to get higher-storage models? This thinking explains the rationale behind the new 128GB storage option for the Nexus 6P.

What this also means, additionally, is that the Nexus 6P is the flagship Nexus – and, as such, will be a bit more expensive than the $399 (maximum) Nexus 5X. With that said, we’re pretty sure that the 128GB storage model will likely cost somewhere between $600-$700. $600 for a 128GB Nexus 6P isn’t bad at all when the same storage would cost $900 with Apple, but it’s likely that the new storage model on the Nexus 6P will match the price of last year’s Motorola Nexus 6 – making it a not-so-friendly purchase for those who want something more affordable. Then again, everything in life comes with a cost, and some may see this as worthwhile to get Android 6.0 Marshmallow before everyone else in the Android world does.

As for the magic date, mark your calendars for September 29, 2015 at 1PM PST (which translates to 4PM EST for East Coasters) in San Francisco.
