Facebook launches ThreatExchange to share security threat info

Facebook launched a new social platform called ThreatExchange where security professionals or companies can share security threat information with other members of the platform easily. ThreatExchange provides an easy and secure way for companies to share their cyber attack data with other people on ThreatExchange without giving out its sensitive data.

The main purpose of this new platform is to provide security experts and companies a common platform where they can collaboration and share information regarding online threats which they are facing. This way, the companies or parties can better protect their data by using that information.

ThreatExchange is built on the same principles which Facebook has. It provides the same privacy controls to companies as Facebook provides to each individual. This way, each company can decide what they want to share and with whom they want to share (a single company or a group of companies or all of them).

Mark Hammel, manager of Facebook’s Threat Infrastructure team said in a statement,

“It was natural for us because our core service is a platform for sharing and because we already had a threat analysis framework called ThreatData that we could build upon. Our goal is that organizations anywhere will be able to use ThreatExchange to share threat information more easily, learn from each other’s discoveries, and make their own systems safer.”

ThreatExchange is in its beta stage and currently Bitly, Dropbox, Facebook, Pinterest, Tumblr, Twitter and Yahoo are participating in it. These companies have taken the initiative to share their data among other users/participants on ThreatExchange.

It’s a great move by Facebook to provide a platform to different agencies, government and corporations where they can help each other by sharing crucial information about any particular cyber threat which could help another company avoid that threat and take precautions.
