How to fix Safari running slow on macOS

Many Mac users experience issues with Safari after they upgrade their MacBook Pro to a new version of macOS. You may notice that Safari is running slow and that it is unresponsive. If you try to scroll the webpage, it may take a long time to process and if you type text into the address bar, it just freezes. Thankfully, there are easy ways to get these issues resolved and here we will tell you what you can do.

Option 1

It is possible that the issue was caused by cache, cookies or other Safari extension issues. In Safari menu bar, you can go to Safari and then Preferences. Then in Privacy tab, select Remove All Website Data option and also remove cache. Then launch Finder window and in Finder menu bar, select Go, then go to Folder option. You can type or paste this code or path and press the Go button.

~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db

Then move Cache.db file to trash. Close and launch Safari again to check if the issue is gone. If the previous steps didn’t solve the issue, the best option is to troubleshoot Safari extensions. In Safari menu bar, go to Safari, then to Preferences and choose Extensions tab. You will beed to disable the extensions and then restart Safari to check if it is working. Check other Safari extensions and then restart Safari to test until you find which is the extension that is not compatible. Uninstall any extension that is causing issues.

Option 2

Poor graphics performance is another cause for the issue. In this case, you need to go to System Preferences, then Mission Control and change Dashboard settings to “off”.

Option 3

You can also try to get the issue solved by changing the default search engine to Bing in Safari. Check the speed and then change it back to Google.

Option 4

Switching off the VideoBox extension in Safari may also help, if you are using one.

Option 5

Remove Dropbox from Mac. This is an alternative that works in some cases.

Option 6

You can change your network preference to the WiFi network that you prefer. This also works in some cases.
