How to Fix Windows 8/10 Update Error “80073712”

Windows 8 and Windows 10 users may come across update error “80073712” after they first install the operating system on their computer. This error indicates that the operating system wasn’t able to update an applications on the device. This error can be caused by a failure on component store, a feature in Window 8 and Windows 10 that keeps files and folders that are required to update your applications. If component store is corrupted, you will probably get the update error 80073712. The good news is that it is possible to fix it and in this guide, you will find the different ways to get it resolved.

Option 1

1. Move the mouse to the upper right side of the screen to open the charms bar.
2. Left click on “Search” and type “Command Prompt” then left click on “Command Prompt as Admin” once the search is completed.
3. When the “Command Prompt” window appears, type the following: DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image / Scanhealth and press Enter.
4. In the command prompt window, this time you will need to enter the following: DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth and hit Enter.
5. In the command prompt window, write Exit and the press the Enter button to leave the command prompt window. Now you can attempt the update again to check if you still get the update error 80073712 message. If you do, you can reboot your device and then try once more.

Option 2

1. For this method, you need to use Windows Update troubleshooter, which can be found here (link: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/instantanswers/512a5183-ffab-40c5-8a68-021e32467565/windows-update-troubleshooter)
2. After installing it,save the file to your device by left clicking on “OK”. Then you can run the executable file and let the Windows Update troubleshooter work.
3. When the troubleshooter finishes, reboot your computer to confirm if the update error 80073712 is still appearing.

Option 3

1. Point the mouse towards the upper right side of the screen to open the menu and left click on Settings. There you have to left click or tap on “Change PC Settings”.
2. Left click Update and recovery and on the next window, left click on “Recovery”.
3. Now you will see an option that says “Refresh your PC without affecting your files” and there you can click on Get Started. Next, you just need to follow the instructions that appear on the screen to perform a quick refresh of the system.
4. Once the refresh is completed, you can try to update again to see if you still come across the Update error.
