Le nom de code d'Android N est New York Cheesecake, le nom final est incertain

Android N is the next major update for Google, after the search engine giant released Android M (final name Android Marshmallow) to Nexus users worldwide back in September. It’s now been six months since, and Google just announced Android N for developers this week. As one can expect, developers are now navigating through the Android N Developer Preview, with some finding what is now known as the codename for Android N: Android New York Cheesecake.

Now, New York Cheesecake could very well be a codename and only a codename. After all, we’ve seen “Key Lime Pie” refer to KitKat in the end, though Google kept the codename in order to keep people from figuring out the real Android K name at the time of its release. For Android L, Google codenamed it “Lemon Meringue Pie,” but the final release name was Android Lollipop. For Android M, it was “Macadamia Nut Cookie,” so, as one can see, Google has a way of using long codenames for the imminent upgrade that the company changes before its release. It’s happened with the last 3 major updates, and we don’t see signs that this will change.

Well, Google is not only releasing the Android N Developer Preview, the company has decided to give Google Opinion Rewards customers the opportunity to name Android N. Google Opinion Rewards users who access the survey database and participate often have likely been met with two questions within the feature: “What tasty food comes to mind that starts with the letter ‘N’?” and “What is your favorite tasty treat from the list below?,” with the options being “Napoleon,” “Nut Brittle,” “Nachos,” “Nori,” “Noodles,” “Nougat,” and “Neapolitan ice cream.” Each of these names can be seen as candidates for the final name, but something tells us that Google Opinion Rewards customers will get some say-so in the final name. Google CEO Sundar Pichai said that he may very well let Indian Android users name the next major update for the mobile operating system. Nutella and Nori have already been mentioned as strong names in the running.

While Android N is being previewed on the Nexus 6, Nexus 6P, and Nexus 5X, Nexus 5 users are still waiting for what could be a future confirmation from Google that Android N is compatible with the two-year-old Nexus smartphone (by the way, the Nexus 5, to date, is still one of Google’s best-selling Nexus smartphones). There’s been no confirmation yet, but if Google’s feeling generous, Nexus 5 users may, along with more current Nexus users, get a taste of what Google’s got next — regardless of what Android N is eventually named.
