LG is preparing to launch the LG G5 and yet, the LG G4 is still making its way in the center spotlight. The latest on the device is that the LG G4 has a boot loop problem.
What is the boot loop problem? The boot loop problem refers to the fact that the LG G4 randomly reboots and, even when it does, it remains stuck in a spinning circle (or loop) and doesn’t seem to ever get back to the main screen. A number of LG G4 customers filed a petition at Change.org back at the end of January to make the Korean manufacturer aware of the problem. After a few days, LG has finally owned up to the boot loop problem on the LG G4 and promises to grant free repairs to those who have a defective device. The issue is in the hardware, the company says:
LG Electronics has been made aware of a booting issue with the LG G4 smartphone that has now been identified as resulting from a loose contact between components. Customers who are experiencing booting issues with their LG G4s should contact their local carrier from where the G4 was purchased or a nearby LG Service Center (www.lg.com/common) for repair under full warranty.
The LG G4 was released by LG in late Spring last year (2015), but the G4 was an iterative update from the G3 and didn’t impress. The V10, released by LG in November, has gone on to amass over 400,000 sales for the first month, an impressive feat when compared to the LG G4.
The issue with the LG G4 is a hardware problem, not a software problem (which is why LG is promising free repairs instead of sending an Android Marshmallow update to fix the problem). Nevertheless, LG G4 users shouldn’t feel ashamed: after all, Apple has had its share of manufacturing defects in iPhones (including the Bendgate scandal of the iPhone 6 Plus), Samsung has had its share of fatal camera flaws in the Galaxy S5 and the Pengate “scandal” of the Galaxy Note 5 where users could get the S Pen stuck and locked into the device if they insert it the wrong way. Sony has had a number of “sudden death” experiences with its Xperia Z flagships, with these devices suddenly dying and remaining dead (having expired after just weeks or months of use). Samsung’s most recent Galaxy S6 from 2015 has also had sudden deaths that can be reversed by way of a soft reset.
At the same time, however, the LG G4 boot loop problem has been a pain for faithful customers who’ve bought LG’s 2015 flagship, and these individuals need to have their device supported and in good working order for the next year and a half they intend to keep the device in their care.
