Motorola Droid Turbo 2 to be announced October 15th, to arrive October 29th

We’ve seen the Droid Turbo 2 name in a Costco list sheet with Verizon as its intended carrier. This is no surprise, since the Droid series has always been the result of a partnership between Motorola and Verizon. Then, the device became known as the Moto X Force (codename Moto X Bounce), but this has become the international name for the device. Motorola often launches Droid phones as Verizon exclusives in the US, then launches the same phones worldwide under different names so as to preserve the US exclusivity. Now, however, more Droid Turbo 2 details are pouring in regarding the device’s specs and features, as well as the announcement date and release date.

Let’s get the new information about the Droid Turbo 2 out of the way. The device will feature a 5.43-inch, Quad HD Plastic OLED (P-OLED) display with a 2,560 x 1,440p screen resolution, an octa-core, Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor with 3GB of RAM, 32 and 64GB of storage, a 5MP front camera, 21MP back camera, and a 3,760mAh battery. The device is said to also feature wireless charging, which isn’t surprising considering Samsung’s fascination and leadership in wireless charging in its own Galaxy S6, S6 edge, S6 edge+, and Galaxy Note5.

If you’re a first-generation Droid Turbo user, you may not notice this, but the battery size for the Droid Turbo 2 is smaller than the 2014 Turbo. The first-generation Droid Turbo has a 3,900mAh battery, while the Droid Turbo 2 battery size will be slightly smaller, at 3,760mAh battery. We’ve heard no word on why this is the case, but we do know that the Droid Turbo 2 will have a slimmer form factor than the Moto X Pure Edition with its 3,600mAh battery (which may explain the smaller battery size). The in-built wireless charging Motorola’s planning could help you forget all about that smaller battery, though. We’ll have to see how this stacks up against Samsung’s fast wireless charging.

The P-OLED, acronymic for “Plastic organic light-emitting diode,” refers to the shatter resistance of the display. Glass is known to crack when it hits concrete or tile or wood, for example, but plastic displays are far more durable in this regard. We’ve seen LG emerge with a P-OLED display in its Android Wear G Watch R smartwatch – though much ado wasn’t made about the display in the watch. The G Watch R wasn’t that popular, too, which took LG back to the drawing board to create the G Watch Urbane and Watch Urbane LTE smartwatches, both of which run Android Wear. Motorola says this smartphone display will be shatter-resistant, but it’ll be interesting to see if that claim holds up and whether or not viewing angles and the smartphone experience will be impacted. Perhaps it’s the case that shatter-resistant smartphones will take off, and that more manufacturers will start to invest in the technology.

The Droid Turbo 2 will feature the controversial Snapdragon 810, and we continue to hear this same thing despite the fact that we don’t think it wise. Looking at the Snapdragon 808, however, there appears to be some slower performance and we can understand Motorola’s decision to pack as much power as possible into the smartphone so that, like the P-OLED display, the Droid Turbo 2 can handle anything you throw at it.

Finally, the Droid Turbo 2 also has an announcement date and a release date. We’ve said sometime ago that the rumored release date was November for Verizon and worldwide customers, but new rumors from close sources say that Motorola will announce the Droid Turbo 2 on October 15th and release the device on October 29th. We assume the release date is for Verizon in the US and the worldwide market, though we can’t be sure at this point.
