Samsung’s Project Valley foldable smartphone to arrive in January

Samsung has been working on flexible displays, but how flexible can flexible displays get? It would take someone working in this area to tell us.

Samsung Display, a subsidiary of Samsung Corporation, has said that flexible displays could arrive on the market in 2016, and the rumor mill is now starting to heat up to confirm that Samsung could very well arrive with the most flexible display yet: a foldable smartphone.

Now, this foldable smartphone would in some sense, contain a wide display size to be used as a tablet for something akin to movie-viewing and game playing; after which, if you wanted to convert it back to a typical smartphone size, you could just fold the tablet back in half and move forward. The current flexible display on the market belongs to the Galaxy S6 edge and S6 edge+, both of which only have a curved edge with the main display still being the sheet panels of the last few years.

As for the specs of the foldable smartphone (what some have called the “Galaxy Fold”), it is said to have 3GB of RAM and a microSD card slot, though we know nothing else about it save for the Qualcomm Snapdragon processors that will power the device. There will be a high-end foldable smartphone and a low-end foldable smartphone, with the low-end having a Snapdragon 620 processor and a high-end having a Snapdragon 820 processor. We do know that Samsung has been testing out the Snapdragon 820 processor for the Galaxy S7, but keep in mind that the Snapdragon 820 processor is a quad-core, not the octa-core of the Snapdragon 810. Rumors have stated that Qualcomm has actually looked to Samsung to help manufacture the Snapdragon 820, but nothing has been confirmed.

For now, though, buckle your seats and get ready to live life on the new “edge” – the edge of Samsung’s upcoming foldable smartphone.
