<\/a><\/p>\nWell, as much as we\u2019ve found our new crush with the BlackBerry Venice name (as have you, we\u2019re sure), the crush and honeymoon must come to an end because a new leak shows the device will be named \u201cBlackBerry Priv\u201d when it\u2019s announced and released. Retired leakster Evan Blass, known at Twitter as @evleaks, has stated as much from his Twitter page: \u201cAt retail, Venice transforms into the\u2026BlackBerry Priv,\u201d a reference not only to a new BlackBerry phone on the way but also the phone\u2019s public name. The BlackBerry Venice is only a honeymoon name for the smartphone that will go on to be named \u201cPriv\u201d because of BlackBerry\u2019s emphasis on privacy in the new smartphone (\u201cpriv\u201d as short for \u201cprivacy\u201d).<\/p>\n
The BlackBerry Priv doesn\u2019t sound as terrible as you may think at first glance, but it doesn\u2019t sound as glamorous as BlackBerry Venice. Even \u201cBlackBerry Secret\u201d or \u201cBlackBerry Guard\u201d would have been better names than \u201cBlackBerry Priv.\u201d If BlackBerry decided to call it the \u201cBlackBerry Privacy,\u201d \u201cBlackBerry Defender,\u201d \u201cBlackBerry Shield,\u201d \u201cBlackBerry Prix,\u201d or \u201cBlackBerry Incognito,\u201d the company would receive a little more applause than the \u201cPriv\u201d label \u2013 which may mean little to average consumers looking to buy into the BlackBerry lineup for the first time.<\/p>\n
I understand that codenames are often given for the device before the final name is released, but what do you do if the codename is a perfect one for the device being released? Do you toss it out when the new name is announced? I think \u201cBlackBerry Privacy\u201d wouldn\u2019t be a bad name for the device, but the \u201cPriv\u201d name sounds a little like \u201cPrix\u201d without the regal nature of the latter. BlackBerry, the device looks gorgeous, and the experience will be great, but don\u2019t ruin it with the \u201cPriv.\u201d Honestly, in light of brainstorming the above names, if you don\u2019t prefer BlackBerry Venice, \u201cBlackBerry Incognito\u201d still gives off an exotic connotation that just may find its home with a growing customer base.<\/p>\n
