L'entreprise vient de d\u00e9voiler un combustible m\u00e9tallique pour r\u00e9acteurs nucl\u00e9aires qui, selon elle, augmentera l'efficacit\u00e9 et la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 de l'\u00e9nergie nucl\u00e9aire.<\/p>\n<p>Les crayons de combustible con\u00e7us par Lightbridge utilisent un oxyde d'uranium en c\u00e9ramique, un compos\u00e9 diff\u00e9rent de l'alliage uranium-zirconium utilis\u00e9 dans les crayons actuels. Les crayons sont \u00e9galement constitu\u00e9s d'une seule pi\u00e8ce de m\u00e9tal qui ressemble \u00e0 un morceau de r\u00e9glisse et qui s'enroule en spirale, contrairement aux pastilles d'uranium cylindriques conventionnelles. La forme des barres permet \u00e0 l'eau de s'\u00e9couler \u00e0 la surface, transf\u00e9rant ainsi plus de chaleur, ce qui se traduit par une augmentation de la production d'\u00e9lectricit\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Lightbridge a d\u00e9j\u00e0 accept\u00e9 de collaborer avec le g\u00e9ant fran\u00e7ais du nucl\u00e9aire Avera pour commercialiser les nouvelles barres. Le PDG de Lightbridge, Seth Grae, a indiqu\u00e9 que la technologie pourrait \u00eatre install\u00e9e d\u00e8s 2020. Cette technologie permet d'augmenter la puissance des r\u00e9acteurs de puissance existants de 10% et de prolonger leur dur\u00e9e d'exploitation entre deux rechargements de 18 mois \u00e0 24 mois.<\/p>\n<p>Le PDG Grae souligne que les nouveaux crayons sont plus puissants, plus rentables, plus s\u00fbrs et qu'ils peuvent contribuer \u00e0 r\u00e9duire les gaz \u00e0 effet de serre. Il ajoute que l'utilisation des \u00e9nergies renouvelables ne permettra pas \u00e0 elle seule d'atteindre les objectifs climatiques fix\u00e9s, mais que les nouveaux types de r\u00e9acteurs y contribueront.<\/p>\n<p>Ian Scott, cofondateur de Moltex Energy, une entreprise du Royaume-Uni, note que la question de la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 des nouveaux crayons est compliqu\u00e9e. Le transfert de chaleur \u00e9lev\u00e9 du combustible solide signifierait que les barres se refroidissent rapidement en cas de perte temporaire du liquide de refroidissement. Cependant, comme le point de fusion du crayon de Lightbridge est beaucoup plus bas que celui des crayons actuels, une catastrophe pourrait m\u00eame se produire beaucoup plus t\u00f4t.
