Intel 6th generation Skylake processors include 95W enthusiast quad-core chips

Succeeding Intel’s 5th generation series of desktop and laptop processors, Broadwell will be replaced by Skylake, which have been processed on the same 14 nm architecture as its predecessor. Skylake-S will be the first desktop lineup of processors that is going to be targeted to desktop platform owners and will become available during the 2nd half of 2015. Additionally, Surface Pro 4 will also be unveiled shortly after the release of the first iteration of Skylake processors.

While the following has not yet been confirmed by Microsoft or Intel, it is possible that Skylake-S series processors will be incorporated in to Microsoft’s flagship tablet and will be based on the mobile variant. Some key features of Skylake-S include socket compatibility on the 100-series chipset motherboards featuring the LGA 1151 socket. Additionally, this lineup will be divided in to three categories:

  • 35W dual-core/quad-core processors
  • 65W dual-core/quad-core processors
  • 95W quad-core processors

The 95W processors will be part of Intel’s Devil’s Canyon lineup and will be delivering the fastest amount of processing speeds thanks to their increased core frequencies. In addition, Skylake processors will also be providing support for both DDR3L and DDR4 memory types. The DDR3L type memory will be available on the mini-PC designs and AIOs. The superior chipsets present in compatible motherboards will provide support for a variety of connectivity and I/O features. Details have been listed below:

  • Over 10 USB 3.0 ports
  • 6 SATA 3.0 ports
  • PCI-Express capability of 1×16, 2×8 or 1×8 + 2×4.
  • Intel RST,
  • Intel RST PCIe (4 M.2 or micro SATA)
  • 2 SATA Express ports

Intel also announced its SSD 750 series, which is PCIe based storage capable of delivering astounding sequential and random read/write speeds. Fortunately, for Skylake motherboard users, Intel’s latest NVMe based storage solutions will also be natively supported on these mainboards.
