The iPhone 5c replaced the iPhone 5 when it was announced, and it appears that the new iPhone 5se, once it’s announced, will eliminate two more recent smartphones in Apple’s lineup — the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
That’s what the latest rumor says about the upcoming 4-inch iPhone we’ve seen leak in a few photos. The new piece of the puzzle is that the iPhone 5se will replace the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, which are now a year old.
In addition to the replacement of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, we’re told that the iPhone 5se will bear the latest processor from Apple, the A9 processor, as opposed to the A8 processor that has been resurrected in iPhone 5se discussion. The M9 motion coprocessor will still advance the handset, providing motion-based support that will let you play games, climb mountains, and do all sorts of physical activity which the M coprocessor is designed to handle.
The iPhone 5se won’t be cheap, seeing that it’s designed to replace the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus at their price points. With that said, the iPhone 6 will cost $99 with a two-year agreement or installment plan, or $550 outright. Thankfully, Ming-Chi Kuo hasn’t made the mistake that he made back when he predicted the iPhone 5c would be budget-friendly. It wasn’t, and the iPhone 5se won’t be, either.
The iPhone 5se is so named because the “se” stands for “special edition.” Rumors abounded before the iPhone 5 was introduced that, in honor of the former Apple CEO Steve Jobs, the iPhone 5 would be named “iPhone 5 SJ,” the “SJ” referring to the now-deceased CEO’s initials of his first and last name. The iPhone 5se may be a way to rekindle the Steve Jobs fervor from an earlier time, with the company possibly honoring the late Steve Jobs now in the iPhone lineup.
The iPhone 5se, in addition to the dual -core processor and M9 motion coprocessor, includes a 12MP back camera, 5MP front camera, a 750p screen resolution, and, like Apple’s new practice, will come in 16GB, 64GB, and 128GB versions. Rumors claim that Apple could announce the 4-inch iPhone around the same time as the iPad Air 3 and the Apple Watch first-generation refresh in March.
