OnePlus 3 RAM fix races phone past Galaxy S7

The OnePlus 3, like all phones, has its flaws, even with the new improvements the company has made to the device. The latest flaw consists of the fact that the OnePlus 3 slows down and kills apps in the background in order to keep battery life at its best — according to co-founder Carl Pei on social media. Pei told his social media listeners that OnePlus aggressively kills apps in the background to preserve battery life and keep the device running at its best. This answer doesn’t seem sufficient, especially considering that OnePlus is marketing the device to have 6GB of LPDDR4 RAM. Most smartphones on the market have 3GB of RAM, and OnePlus only increased its RAM in order to get there before Samsung — the only company that, up to date, was rumored to have 6GB of LPDDR4 RAM in the upcoming Galaxy Note 7 edge. With 6GB of RAM, users are paying more for the 6GB RAM model than they would’ve paid for a 4GB RAM model (if the rumor had come true) and expect to have the performance that matches their dollars. It seems a bit manipulative to dangle 6GB of RAM in front of consumers, charge them more because of the RAM, then limit how much of the RAM they can use.

Well, some developers over at XDA have finally dug deep to get to the source of why OnePlus has limited its RAM management and how to overcome it. Fortunately, they have discovered that the key to opening up your 6GB of RAM is to change some of the build prop code contained within the device OS. In order to change the code of course, you’ll need to root your Android device and gain admin access to your device.

After fixing the RAM build prop code, XDA was able to re-test the OnePlus 3 against the Galaxy S7 again (running Samsung’s Exynos 8890 processor) and, sure enough, the OnePlus 3 won the speed contest by about 8 seconds (1 minute 22 seconds to 1 minute, 30 seconds).
