Origin Eon 17-S Review

Introduction

 

EON17-S is one of the latest gaming laptop released by Origin and comes equipped with all the latest and fastest hardware from Intel and Nvidia. It has a base price of $1630 but with all the bells and whistles included it costs a whopping $3540, which is serious money for a laptop. With that latest hardware, EON17-S manages to give blazing fast performance, which can put many high end laptops to shame.

 

Design and Features

 

With EON17-S, Origin decided not to follow the current trend of ultra-slim design set by ultrabooks and chose the old fashioned, thick and heavy design. It weighs a little over 8 pounds and overall measurements are 1.8 x 16.5 x 11.5 inches (H x W x D). The chassis and interior are matte black in color, while in contrast, the lid has a glossy finish and comes in three different colors. Users can choose from red, black and white or by paying $150 extra they can get a custom paint of their choosing. Build quality of Origin EON17-S is rigid and it feels solid in the hands. With a laptop this big, Origin had a lot of space for ports and they used it wisely. EON17-S comes with a variety of ports. On the right side, with the Blu-Ray drive, there is a USB 2.0 port and audio ports which support external sound systems up to 5.1 channel. On the left side, there is a USB 2.0/eSATA combo port, two USB 3.0 ports, Ethernet port, a SD card reader and a 4-pin FireWire port. While on the back it features a Mini DisplayPort, DisplayPort, a HDMI port and S/PDIF port.

 

Origin EON17-S comes with 17.3-inch 1920×1080 pixel full HD display and it packs hardware strong enough to smoothly play all the latest games and Blu-Ray movies on its native resolution. Some time, the display produces highly inaccurate colors. EON17-S comes with a full size backlit keyboard with a numeric pad. All the keys are reasonably big and evenly backlit. The keys are comfortable to type and provide good tactile feedback when pressed. Color and brightness of backlight can be adjusted by the users with hardware keys. Below the beautiful keyboard is a large multi-touch trackpad with separate left and right mouse buttons. The trackpad is also illuminated and the color can be adjusted by the user. The trackpad is centrally located and gives accurate output.

 

Above the keyboard, there is a pair of Onkyo speakers which produce good quality sound and are loud enough to fill a small room. A small 1-inch subwoofer is integrated under the chassis, which produce decent bass without distortion. Thanks to speakers and subwoofer, while gaming users can hear even the faintest sounds. It also features 802.11ac Wi-Fi with WiDi support and Bluetooth 4.0 for wireless connectivity. Origin has kept the laptop free of bloatware, users will only find Nvidia programs and drivers when they first boot into Windows 8.1. Origin covers EON17-S with only one-year warranty for parts.

 

Performance

 

As a gaming laptop, EON17-S is equipped with all the latest and fastest hardware. It comes with Intel Core i7-4940MX quad-core processor with Intel HD Graphics and 16GB RAM. The processor is clocked at 3.1GHz and belongs to Intel’s latest Haswell series of processors which are famous for their low power consumption and superior performance. To fulfill all the gaming needs it comes with Nvidia GeForce GTX880M discreet graphics card. For storage, it comes with two 120GB mSATA SSDs running in a Raid o array and a 750GB mechanical hard drive.

 

Thanks to its configuration, Origin EON17-S managed to perform on par with the latest high end gaming laptops and aced all the benchmark tests. It scored 3,447 points during PCMark 8’s work test, while EON17-SLX with its dual-gpu setup managed to score 4050 points. While running Heaven and Valley benchmark tests on Ultra settings, EON17-S managed to give 35fps and 46fps, respectively. Thanks to its dual-gpu setup, EON17-SLX managed to give 69fps and 86fps during the same tests. While running all latest games like Battlefield 4 at 1080p, EON17-S managed to give playable frame rates with maximum eye candy. EON17-S lasted 3 hours and 19 minutes during the battery test while EON17-SLX and Alienware 17 barely managed an hour during the same battery test.

 

 

 

Conclusion

 

With its excellent hardware and top notch performance, EON17-S offers great value for money and is one of the biggest rivals of high-end gaming laptops like Alienware 17 and EON17-SLX. It might be one of the best options for hardcore gamers who want to take their gaming where ever they go. With its large size and heavy weight, EON17-S might not be a good choice as an ultraportable laptop but it sure can replace any gaming machine and is considered one of the best high-end gaming laptops.
