Samsung’s Consumer Gear VR headset is now available for pre-order

Samsung has announced its Galaxy S6, S6 edge, S6 edge+, and Galaxy Note 5, and the Korean giant said earlier this year that a Gear VR consumer version would be available for purchase. For the last several months, we’ve not yet seen a glimpse of this Gear VR headset, but we’ve heard for some time now that the price would be right: at $99.

If you’ve been waiting for your perfect Christmas present, the time is growing closer. Reports say that Best Buy is now taking pre-orders for the Gear VR consumer edition. The price, as rumors stated, is $99, although the device itself won’t make it to store shelves until next month (in time for Christmas, no doubt). Since many crazy tech enthusiasts don’t want to wait for it, you can order it now and have it shipped just as it becomes available in retail stores.

The Gear VR is Samsung’s take on virtual reality, with 2015 smartphones having access to it (only). Samsung hasn’t stated any intentions of making the Gear VR backwards-compatible with handsets such as the Galaxy Note 4 or Galaxy S5, for example, so only those who own one of the company’s 2015 smartphones can partake of this first consumer Gear VR headset.

Best Buy is throwing in a free 16GB microSD card with 3D movie trailers and 360-degree videos as an incentive, though what Samsung users do with it is something of a mystery; after all, it’s not as though their 2015 devices allow microSD cards at this point. If the Gear VR consumer headset allows for the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy S5, though, the microSD card will come in handy.

If you’re interested, head on over to Best Buy’s Gear VR pre-order page and place your order for the first, historic VR headset from Samsung. The release date is pegged as November 20th, so you won’t have to wait too long.
