T-Mobile gives $200 per line to Sprint switchover customers

T-Mobile has spent a lot of time “wining and dining” its own customers this holiday, with the carrier’s latest deal for its own Simple Choice postpaid customers being the three months of free, high-speed, unlimited LTE data for nothing extra. It’s part of how T-Mobile is honoring its own customer base with gifts this holiday season. If you’re a Sprint, customer, however, T-Mobile CEO John Legere wants you to know that you deserve better; it’s high time to stop kicking yourself and get with a better carrier and a better monthly agreement.

Starting tomorrow, T-Mobile is offering any Sprint or Boost Mobile (Sprint MVNO) customer $200 back for each switchover line they bring from Sprint to T-Mobile. A family of 5 will receive $1000 credit back (which could give 2 new smartphones with T-Mobile), and a group of 10 could save $2000. There is no limit to the number of lines you can bring over to the Magenta carrier, and no mandatory device trade-in — so you could be looking at one of the hottest deals from the nation’s third largest carrier this season.

I cannot think of any wireless customers in more desperate need of some holiday cheer than those Sprint customers still hanging on over there. Those poor people have put up with the nation’s slowest and smallest LTE network, and their carrier throwing out a deal-of-the-month for everyone except them. We know Sprint’s customers love T-Mobile when they switch, so this holiday season, we’re taking away every barrier and cost to coming over to the Un-carrier and America’s fastest 4G LTE network. Happy holidays!” said T-Mobile’s vocal CEO in the carrier’s formal announcement.

T-Mobile CEO John Legere and Sprint CEO Marcel Claure have had something of a love/hate relationship between them, with Sprint’s CEO talking about the terrible-performing 2G EDGE network most customers have to live in. As a former T-Mobile customer, I can attest to this. T-Mobile’s Simple Choice plans are only simple if you live in an area where there is legitimate 3G/4G access without having to drive down the street or across town to experience Magenta’s blazing-fast 4G LTE network coverage. It’s good to see T-Mobile treat its customer base and want to win over Sprint customers, but Sprint customers, like Verizon customers, have to make decisions based upon coverage — not deals. No deal, no matter how good-looking the present, means much if my area is limited in coverage and can’t experience it. A free 3 months of service means nothing without coverage capability.

Out of all the kind deals T-Mobile deals this holiday, it’d be nice to see Magenta work on improving its coverage in rural areas. This seems to be the main reason behind why Big Red carrier Verizon is winning the battle on all fronts despite T-Mobile’s customer base growth.
