The Panasonic NN-SD997S Microwave Review

A microwave is a microwave is a microwave.  Right?  In many instances, that may be the case.  But looks can be deceiving, both for the good and for the not so good.  When it comes to selecting the microwave for your household needs, it pays to shop around.  One microwave worth giving a look is the Panasonic NN-SD997S.

Why Should You Get It

This is a large capacity microwave, coming in at 2.2 cubic feet and weighing in at 36.8 pounds.  It will be noticed on the countertop or cabinet, with a footprint of 14 inches high, 24 inches wide, and 20 inches deep.  The sleek stainless finish fits in well with the other stainless appliances so popular these days.  The blue illuminated LEDs on the dial and display screen are easy to read.  There is also a menu option if you need explicit cooking instructions, plus you can get helpful hints in three different languages if you need it.

For an additional $180, you can get the optional built-in kit and go for a custom installation.  If you’re not looking for a fixed installation, then the midrange price tag of $234 is what you’ll be facing.  For that price, you not only get the larger capacity and a full 1250 watts, you get Panasonic’s inverter tech.

What Makes It Different

Inverter tech is an uncommon feature in microwaves, and could make a difference, depending on your needs.  With inverter tech, the power level throughout the cooking process is maintained at a constant level instead of switching between 50% power and 100% power, as is customary in most other microwaves.  This supposedly makes a difference when cooking or reheating.  If this interests you, test it out yourself and decide if it is worth the cost.

Is It Worth It?

If you’re not the type to regularly cook large meals with heavy use of the microwave, then this Panasonic NN-SD997S is probably not for you.  If you do have a small army waiting to be served, then you’ll enjoy the power and size of this midrange countertop microwave.  When compared to other microwaves on the high-end of the microwave spectrum, the Panasonic NN-SD997S held its ground.  Sleek and classy looking, it can meld into any kitchen décor, even masquerading as a high-end product.  Whether or not you let others know you only paid its midrange price is up to you.  We won’t tell if you won’t.
