Windows XP still the 2nd most-used Windows OS in the world

According to a recent report published by a statistical company, Windows XP is still the 2nd most widely used Windows operating system in the world. The report is based on the overall web traffic coming from Net Applications from desktop platform running the Windows operating systems. Even after 13 years of its release, Windows XP manages to even beat Windows 8 and Windows 8.1

According to the report, 16.9 percent of desktop operating systems still run Windows XP although the percentage has fallen down from 19.1 percent which was previously recorded in February this year. Even though Windows XP is losing its dominance, it still beats the collective share of 14 percent of Windows 8 and 8.1. Windows 8.1 is the 3rd most widely used Windows operating system while Windows 8 is at 5th place with just 3.5 percent.

Windows 7 is on top spot with 58 percent share of the PC market. There is an interesting metaphor created by people over the past decade about Windows operating systems. According to them, Microsoft Windows operating systems are categorized as flip and flop. The idea behind this is that every next Windows version is a flop. This has been going on from Windows 95 which was a flop, Windows 98 was a flip, Windows 2000 flop, Windows XP flip and then all the way down to Windows 7 being a flip.

The new Windows 10 operating system announced by Microsoft is showing a little blip on the Net Applications graph. And with the free Windows 10 upgrade for everyone, the share for Windows 10 will definitely see a gradual increase once it lands in the market.
