Video game compilations are great for two reasons: One, they allow people to play games that have been released on consoles they don’t have and two, because it gives the developers a chance to update their game to the modern age. Unfortunately, sometimes they don’t always manage to hit both of those reasons, either missing out an important title, or making the updated version of the game a little unplayably buggy. Thankfully for you though, we’ve compiled a list of some of the best compilations out there, so that you don’t need to go around doing the dirty work, well other than actually going out and getting them.

10.Metal Slug Anthology – (Ps2, PSP, Wii)

Metal Slug is probably one of the best side-scrolling platformers out there, and this anthology has them all, from Metal Slug 1 to Metal Slug X. The graphics have also been improved, bringing them up to 480i vs the 240p that they used to be. On top of that, you sound galleries, art galleries, and even some interviews with the developers.

All in all, this is a great anthology for any Metal slug fan.

9. Legend of Zelda: Collectors Edition – (GameCube)

One of Nintendo’s biggest and most complex IPs, Legends of Zelda has a cult following all over the world, which is why this anthology isn’t a surprise. Included are emulated versions of The Legend of Zelda, The Adventures of Link, Ocarnia of time and Majora’s mask, as well as a demo of Twilight princes. In addition to all those titles, you get promotional materials, some videos and a player’s guide.

The catch here is that this collector’s edition was only available in North America as a gift if you bought a GameCube, so it’s incredibly rare and expensive. If you can find a copy, this is a true gem.

8. Metroid Prime Trilogy – (wii)

Arguably one of my personal favorite franchises, Metroid hasn’t been in the public eye as much as some of Nintendo’s other franchises, although Samus has become a bit of a meme unto herself. This anthology adds great value to any library, including Metroid Prime, Metroid Prim 2: Echoes and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. On top of that, the upgrade of the game to the Wii brought with it motions controls and some nicer graphics.

Much like Legend of Zelda: Collectors Edition, this game is a bit hard to find since Nintendo didn’t really tell anybody when this anthology came up for sale in 2009. Therefore, this game is just as rare and an actual collectible. If you have this anthology, I envy you.

7. God of War Saga – (Playstation 3)

As a gamer, you can’t talk about Greek gods without bringing up Kratos, the fallen warrior once serving Ares, now seeking retribution and forgiveness for killing his family. This anthology features five titles in the series: God of War I – III, Chains of Olympus and Ghosts of Sparta. For those of you who haven’t played God of War yet, then this is probably one of the best value for money that you’re going to find.

If you happen to be lucky enough to get God of War: Omega Collection, then you also get a SteelBook game case with artwork, as well as a bronze statue of Kratos. This collection only came out in Latin America, so good luck getting your hands on it.

6. Mega Man Anniversary Collection – (Playstation 2, GameCube, Xbox)

Mega Man, our little blue bomber, is one of the most classic platformers out there, and the character and his friends have spawned a massive franchise. In this anthology, you get the 8 original Mega Man games, meaning you can go all the way back into the history of the character and play it how it was originally made. You also get the chance to unlock to games: Mega Man: The Power Battle and Mega Man: The Power fighters.

Along with all those titles, there’s art galleries, remixed music, and a hint system. So if you’re a fan of Mega Man, this game is a must.

5. Rare reply – (Xbox One)

Rare was one of the most successful and loved developers, releasing some of the best and most remembered games out there. This collection has a whopping 30 titles, including Banjo-Kazooie, Killer Instinct Gold, Perfect dark and Conker’s Bad Fur day. In addition to that massive amount of gaming fun, you get cheat codes, interviews with the developers and even some behind the scene footage.

Actually, I might end up getting an Xbox One just for this collection alone.

4. Super Mario All-Stars Limited Edition – (Wii)

Mario, the most famous plumber and an iconic character world-wide, with those credentials, it’s not hard to see why this collector’s edition came out. Including in this anthology (which has amazing box art by the way) you get to play Super Mario Bros. 1-3 and Super Mario Bros. : The Lost Levels. Included in the package is a 32 page booklet detailing the history of the franchise, as well as a cd with some of the most memorable tracks of Super Mario.

3. Sonics Ultimate Genesis Collection – (Playstation 3, Xbox 360)

The fastest hedgehog in town, sonic was Sega’s response to Nintendo’s Mario, and an equally endearing figure in gamer’s hearts. The title is a little bit misleading, as the collection includes non-sonic titles, like Alex the Kid, Vectorman and Shinobi III. All in all, it has 49 games for you to play the fun out of. You also get exclusive videos covering the more popular and larger games in the collections.

2. The Orange Box – (PC, Ps3, Xbox 360, Max, Linux)

Unfortunately, we cannot confirm Half-Life 3, but in the meantime, you can take refuge in the Orange Box. Probably one of the most sold collections out there, there’s almost no reason to even write it here since most people reading this probably already have it. In case you don’t, the collection has 5 games: Half – Life 2, Half – Life 2: Episode 2, Portal and Team Fortress 2.

If you haven’t gotten around to playing Valve’s games yet, then I would suggest you get right on obtaining The Orange Box.

1. Metal Gear Solid HD collection – (Ps3, Ps Vita, Xbox 360)

Metal Gear Solid is THE seminal stealth game which popularize the genre and spawned several installments in the franchise. This little collection actually includes the first 2 games in the franchise, Metal Gear 1 and Metal Gear 2, as well as MGS 2: Sons of Liberty, MGS 2: Snake Eater and MGS: Peacewalker. They’ve all been overhauled to run on 720p and at 60gps, as well support for achievements.

The only downside is that this collection doesn’t include the original Metal Gear Solid, for some reason, thereby making it an incomplete set. Even so, this collection is great, and a must for any die-hard MGS fan, especially since the first two titles in the franchise are included.
