Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update for AT&T Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy Note Edge, and Verizon LG G3

As is the usual case within Android, Google pushes out a new major update while many older Android handsets are still getting earlier ones. The latest update is for two Samsung handsets with AT&T and one handset at Verizon.

The Galaxy Note Edge has been something of a curious device for updates, with the handset not getting too much attention after it was announced last year along with the Galaxy Note 4. The Galaxy Note 4 has already received Android 5.0 Lollipop, and the same handset is destined to get Android 6.0 Marshmallow – but little had been said about the Note Edge getting updated until T-Mobile, and now Verizon, acknowledged it would receive the update to Android Marshmallow as well. Android Marshmallow seems as though it’s some weeks or months away from arriving for the Galaxy Note Edge, but we now have confirmation of Samsung’s intention to continue updating the device: Android 5.1.1 Lollipop is now arriving for the AT&T Galaxy Note Edge.

Of course, AT&T is now bringing 5.1.1 Lollipop to the Galaxy Note 4, too. Verizon’s LG G3 is getting Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, an update that may prove to be the beginning of the end for LG’s 2014 flagship. The G3 is nearing eighteen months old, and Android handsets usually update for 24 months. With that said, G3 folks may get Android Marshmallow, but it’ll be Spring 2016 before the update comes; by then, Google will have a new Marshmallow update available, but at least G3 users may get one last sweet treat before LG lays the device to rest.

As for the update size, AT&T’s Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge update looks to be about 700MB, a fairly large update with purpose. The large update to Android 5.1.1 Lollipop brings camera improvements for both front and rear cameras, bug fixes, as well as the Stagefright vulnerability patch. Although AT&T hasn’t confirmed the software patch, Samsung’s 2015 devices (such as the Galaxy S6 Active) have already received the Stagefright patch with Android 5.0.2 Lollipop, for example.

To find your new Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update, head on over to your settings, then “About Phone,” then select “software update.” Also, charge your device to at least 50% before starting the update, as updates are known to drain 20-30% of your current battery state before downloading successfully.

Have you updated your AT&T Galaxy Note Edge/Galaxy Note 4 or Verizon LG G3? Are you noticing smoother performance and animations than before? Let us know in the comments.
