Android Marshmallow for Sony Xperia Z5 to arrive in January 2016, tech journalist confirms

Android Marshmallow has come to Google’s Nexus devices, alongside of the LG G4 and some Motorola and HTC devices (the unlocked One M8). Sony has announced its Android Marshmallow-eligible devices list, but we’re now getting some official timeframe regarding when Sony will release the dessert goodness for its latest devices (the Xperia Z5, Z5 Compact, and Z5 Premium).

A tech journalist by the Twitter name @Ricciolo1 took to the social network site Wednesday to announce that Sony’s latest devices will see Android Marshmallow next month, in January 2016: “As I said, an update has come yesterday, #marshmallow READY next month for #sony #z5 family…older #xperia models to follow shortly..;),” Ricciolo1 said.

The other Xperia Z models, such as the Sony Xperia Z3, Z3+, and other recent mid-range Xperia devices will get the Android Marshmallow update after the Xperia Z5, Xperia Z5 Compact, and Xperia Z5 Premium. This is not a surprise, seeing that most manufacturers tend to favor newer devices over older ones. What we know at this point is that Sony’s newest will be the first to get the update, but it will come some 4 months after Google announced Android Marshmallow and its debut on the Nexus 6P (Huawei) and the Nexus 5X (LG).

It’s been said that Sony has a better device update track record than Samsung, but keep in mind that Sony doesn’t have too many phone releases in the US. For example, Sony and Verizon had teamed up to tease the Xperia Z4, but after Sony released the Z5 series (including the Premium), Verizon decided to pull the Z4 without explanation. Of course, US customers would want the Xperia Z5, but Sony’s push of the new phone made the Z4 obsolete anyway. With that said, most US customers with Sony devices rarely see updates to their devices. If you’re a US consumer with a Sony Xperia device in mind, I’d discourage purchasing one. The worldwide satisfaction with Sony won’t produce the same result here.

So, for Sony Xperia Z5 customers who’ve already made the plunge, though, the time is almost here. We’ll let you know when Android Marshmallow updates for the Z5, Z5 Compact, and Z5 Premium arrive.
