Asus Announces Android Marshmallow Update for These Devices

Apple releases iOS for all its scheduled devices on the same day, so iPhone customers need never worry about whether or not Apple will deliberate too long on the issue of updated devices. The situation is different within Android, however, where there are multiple manufacturers and multiple devices with different price points, features, and so on. The Android consumer, as a result, has to work hard to discover whether or not his or her device will get updated. Asus has decided to come clean and leave its user base in the dark no longer about its Android Marshmallow-eligible devices.

In the company’s ZenTalk Forum, Asus provided a list of the devices it will update to Android Marshmallow: “We are planning to support the Android M upgrade for below model:

PadFoneS (PD500KL)
ZenFone2 (ZE550ML/ZE551ML)
ZenFone2 Deluxe/ Special Edition
(ZE551ML)
ZenFone2 Laser
(ZE500KG/ZE500KL/ZE550KL/ZE600KL/ZE601KL)
ZenFone Selfie (ZD551KL)
Please stay tuned to ZenTalk for the latest update on rollout timing.”

The devices are 2015 devices, meaning that the company doesn’t seem to have any desire to upgrade its 2014 devices such as the ZenFone 5, ZenFone 6, and others, which means that those devices will no longer have update support after only a year (or less) of publicity and use. Customers in those situations will be forced to purchase a 2015 or 2016 device if they have any hope of upgrade eligibility for the foreseeable future.

It’s a good thing that Asus has become transparent about the Android Marshmallow upgrade, but there’s always a loss with transparency: some devices will be updated, others will not (some customers will be happy, others will not).
