HTC One M8 Google Play Edition to get Android Marshmallow update this month, Product VP says
Android Marshmallow has already been pushed out to Google’s Nexus devices, with the October 5th date having been all too precise. Now, however, it looks as though the Google Play Edition (or GPE) devices are next in line to get Google’s sweet treat.
The new evidence for this hope comes from HTC Product VP Mo Versi, who, when asked about when the HTC One M8 GPE will get Android Marshmallow responded, “M8 GPE will include Marshmallow OS update. Our target is this month. Will advise once we are close to release.”
Now, to be objective, HTC has made claims about updates prior, with its infamous 90-day update timeframe to bring its devices from Android 4.4 KitKat to Android 5.0 Lollipop. The company fell short of its promise, with HTC users feeling as though the company overpromised when it should have been more upfront with users about the impossibility of quick updates. HTC has recently said that promising monthly security patches for its devices is “unrealistic,” despite the criticisms the company may receive from doing so.
The HTC One M8 Google Play Edition is only a year old, seeing that the One M8 arrived last year (2014), as did the GPE device soon thereafter. We’re not surprised to see the device updated, but it’s also safe to say that even this month may be a stretch, considering that the update was only issued a week ago for Nexus devices (Nexus 6, Nexus 5, Nexus 7, Nexus 9, and Nexus Player). At least a 90-day promise would seem more reasonable here, but, then and again, there’s very little that’s new with Android Marshmallow – so we see no reason why HTC couldn’t fulfill the end-of-the-month promise.
