Nexus 6P, 5X, and Player producing washed-out colors caused by Android Marshmallow update

The Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X were announced in September, just three months ago, and, as usual, Google’s latest devices sport the latest update. In this case, the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X sport Android Marshmallow, seeing that it follows after Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. Many a customer has said within the Android market that he or she would love to have the latest updates from Google as soon as possible, but the counterargument has been that new updates often bring new bugs and a fresh, new set of problems that you may or may not want or desire to live with. The same can be said for Android Marshmallow, and a new issue with the Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, and the Nexus Player is causing the problem.

The problem concerns washed out colors on-screen, and it seems to apply to both of Google’s latest flagships as well as the latest Nexus Player. One commenter wrote Google, “Have the same issue with my NP on 6.0 washed out blacks. Only tried it with the Play movies & TV app. My other NP on 5.1.1 works fine.” Another customer wrote, “On my Nexus 6P the original MDA890 build didn’t have this issue, but flashing the other 3 images shows the issue. It’s especially bad on AMOLED screens…”

A Google Project member responded with the following on December 3rd: Hey everyone, we understand the severity of this issue. It’s a widespread problem impacting all Nexus Players on 6.0. We’re working as fast as possible to resolve it. We also noticed similar problems on Nexus 6P and 5X, as reported in #14; however, those have a different root-cause. Those have been fixed internally, and will be included in a future MR.”

The Nexus 6P is Google’s first flagship that really contends with the Apple iPhone, having produced better images and photo quality when examined by photography expert site DxOMark Mobile. The Nexus 6P also features an aluminum metal unibody, with an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor, 3GB of RAM, and 32GB of minimum storage, with prices starting at $499 (32GB), $549 (64GB), and $649 (128GB). The Nexus 5X was introduced as a more budget-friendly alternative to the Nexus 6P, with a minimum 16GB model costing $299 and the 32GB model costing $379.99.

For now, however, the issue has been fixed on the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X, but these users won’t see it until Google pushes out Android 6.0.1 or Android 6.1 Marshmallow. For Nexus Players, there’s no word on when the issue will be fixed. To find out more about the problem, you can visit the Google AOSP project page below.
