Square Enix Announces Kingdom Hearts 2.8, Because Of Course They Do
Last week we received evidence that Square Enix had a new Kingdom Hearts game planned. It was listed on a designer’s LinkedIn page that he had worked on a game called Kingdom Hearts 2.9. Apparently Square has decided that the game is one-tenth less impressive than that, as today at the Tokyo Game Show they announced Kingdom Hearts 2.8.
Square had previously remastered Kingdom Hearts I & II for the PS3 under the titles 1.5 and 2.5. In addition to the major console titles, each included HD remasters of previous games in the series released for portable systems. 2.8 looks to be finishing off this process as it will bring an HD remastering of Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance, previously a 3DS title, to the PS4.
In addition, the title will include a new HD cinematic entitled Kingdom Hearts X Back Cover which will include content from the Kingdom Hearts Unchained X mobile game. Finally, the game will include a new playable episode entitled Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth By Sleep -A Fragmentary Passage- which will follow the events of the original Birth By Sleep. The game has a non-specific 2016 release date.
With Kindom Hearts III on the horizon, but still without any real idea of when the game will be done, fans, who have been waiting a full 10 years since Kingdom Hearts II, have had to make do with with these re-releases. There won’t be anything left to release after this, unless they go back and release 1.5 and 2.5 for the PS4. Actually at this rate it could be another decade before KHIII is released.
