The Differences Between Chargers

There are a lot of different types of chargers available in the marketplace. You may be wondering what the different types of chargers you can choose from are. Here are some of the most important buying criteria you want to familiarize yourself with before buying one.

1. Do You Want Wireless or Wired?

Previously, there were only wired chargers in the marketplace. This has rapidly shifted and now there are seemingly more wireless chargers than wired being sold. People have become creatures of convenience to wireless chargers. With wireless chargers in the marketplace, more and more phone manufacturers are adding wireless charging capabilities as a primary feature. These models offer the advantage of not having to be plugged in. You can place your phone on the charger and it will magically charge.

These chargers have become a major trend in the industry. It’s only growing in popularity among consumers. You’ll find only some of the phones in the marketplace are being sold with wired chargers included anymore. However, not every phone accepts a wireless charge. You need to ensure your phone model offers this capability in its feature set.

If you are thinking about whether you should go with a wireless or a wired charging solution, you’ll want to think about the pros and the cons of each. Not only is a mega wireless charger convenient and flexible, but it’s also stylish. However, the downside is that you won’t be able to use it unless it’s sitting flush with the charger. This makes it difficult to use while laying in bed and doing other things. Also, it will be more expensive.

2. USB Ports

Another thing that you are going to want to consider is whether or not you need more USB ports. Whenever you purchase a brand new phone, you usually get a new charger with it. This typically includes a USB type A or USB type C connector. It’s only going to allow you to charge a single device at once. When you purchase a charger with multiple ports, it gives you a lot more flexibility to charge multiple devices at a single time.

3. Fast Charging

One of the major differences between a lot of the chargers in the marketplace is fast charging. Fast charging has become a major advertised feature for a lot of phone manufacturers. Because of this, it’s become a major advertised feature of charger brands too. More and more people want faster-charging solutions. This feature makes it so you can charge your device in a fraction of the time it used to take. However, to take advantage of this, you need a phone that has the functionality and a charger that delivers it. Not every charger is capable of delivering fast charging. You’ll need to ensure it offers the advertised speeds.

Almost all brands are moving towards incorporating fast charging into their newer phone releases. It’s become a mainstay feature for smartphones. The most standard being issued to phones is compatibility with Qualcomm Quick Charge. The majority of brands use this standard. It can get more complex if the brand uses a proprietary solution. Some brands used other solutions which means you don’t get the benefit of universal compatibility. Some of these brands include OnePlus, Lenovo, Oppo, and Huawei.

To use the right charger and to get the benefits of the fast charging solution, you’ll need to ensure you know what technology your phone supports. If you don’t, you may lose out on the ability to fast charge your device. Also, it could damage your device if you use the wrong charging solution.

4. Amperage

You need to ensure you are checking on the amperage when you are looking at chargers. You’ll find different chargers offering different amperage. You need to make note of this because it will dictate what kind of charger works for your device. If the charger advertises a higher amperage, it means it’s going to deliver more power at once. In theory, this will mean it will charge your phone faster if your phone accepts that higher delivery. You want to look at the maximum wattage your phone takes. Your phone’s manufacturer will advertise this feature and you can make note of it.

5. USB Type

You need to figure out what USB your phone supports. The majority of newer devices being released are moving to the better and more efficient USB-C solution. However, the older devices support the legacy USB Type-A. You need to figure out which one your phone uses because that will dictate the right charging solution to get. While you could always get converters and adapters to make use of older or newer chargers, it’s best to get one that supports your phone’s USB type out of the box. If you are using Apple devices like an iPhone, you will want a charger that is compatible with Lighting cables which is Apple’s proprietary connector.
