The Nexus Marlin and Nexus Sailfish are two 2016 Nexus phones on the way from Google in September. We’ve seen enough rumors to believe the contrary. Yet, for all we’ve seen, we’d much rather hear it from those who know that see photos that could easily be photoshopped. Well, we’re back to bring more confirmations from Evan Blass (a.k.a. @evleaks).
On his Twitter page three days ago, one of the most renown leakster who confirmed some important details for Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 leaked some important details about the 2016 Nexus phones. “Verizon is going to carry the two ‘Nexus’ handsets (note the quotation marks).” These words suggest that yes, Verizon will carry the two 2016 Nexus phones, which will prove a relief to carrier customers who want to select their next Nexus phone alongside the Samsung, HTC, LG, and Motorola devices out there at the forefront of carrier offerings. Last year’s Huawei Nexus 6P wasn’t so fortunate to arrive at carriers, and the Nexus 6 didn’t turn out too well with Big Red (considering it was released at the wireless giant months after it had been out elsewhere).
Evan Blass says something else here, though: the 2016 Nexus phones will be “Nexus” handsets with a “note the quotation marks” comment made afterward. This response may seem odd to some, but it suggests that the 2016 Nexus phones will not actually carry the “Nexus” branding at America’s top wireless carrier.
This may seem like a terrible move, but for some reason, it seems to be the move the carrier is willing to make to sell the device there. For some reason, this is the right that carriers have to incorporate a device within their stock and sell it to the consumer public. This has been done before more than a few times: back in 2008, AT&T renamed the “HTC Touch Pro” the “HTC Fuze“; the HTC Vigor was rebranded as le DROID Incredible HD before it launched later that season. Of the 4 big carriers, only AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint launched the Samsung Galaxy S2 — with Sprint renaming the Galaxy S2 “Epic 4G Touch” avant de le placer devant les clients.

No smartphone line, with the exception of a few popular high-ends (the Galaxy S and Note lines, and the iPhone line, for example) are immune, though — since their sales are tied directly to their brand name.
