We’ve been hearing much about Google’s two new Nexus phones that are planned for an October unveil, and today’s Android Marshmallow declaration finally puts a “face” (or, should I say, dessert) on Google’s next sweet treat of an update.
Well, on the same day that Android Marshmallow is announced, a photo of the upcoming LG Nexus 2015 surfaces on the Web. The picture shows a white back with the “Nexus” name on it (as we’ve seen with the Nexus 5 from 2013), along with a “not for sale” label on the back. On the back side of the device, we’re also shown a “circle” beneath the camera and LED flash (or what appears to be a dual-LED flash setup) at the top of the back cover. The camera is certainly protrusive, as you can see it bulges out just slightly from the back of the device. We assume that the circle beneath the camera is nothing more than the fingerprint scanner. The “red symbol” is on the white tag on the back, which matches the red LG symbol we’ve seen on the company’s products before.
There are some differences between the LG Nexus 2015 (that is to come) and the LG Nexus 2013. First, whereas the 2013 LG Nexus 5 had the camera on the left side of the back of the device, the 2015 LG Nexus will have the camera in the center. Whereas the 2013’s back camera was not protrusive at all, the 2015 LG Nexus looks to have a protruding camera – likely the result of a thin and light design. The flash on the 2013 LG Nexus 5 was circular and slightly below the camera, whereas the LG Nexus 2015’s flash is to the left side of the camera sensor (and has a second flash to boot). The 2013 LG Nexus 5 had no fingerprint scanner, but the LG Nexus 2015 will, due to Google’s inclusion of native fingerprint support in Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
At this point, the LG Nexus 2015 has a white version, according to the photo leak, but there’s likely a black version of the Nexus 2015 around the corner, too. LG released both black and white versions in 2013 when the Korean manufacturer and Google teamed up to create the device. The “not for sale” statement on the back of the device means that this is a testing unit or device prototype, one that will likely be destroyed after the testing has been conducted. In other words, don’t assume that this LG Nexus 2015 prototype is the final version; a number of design changes could take place between now and the LG Nexus 2015’s reveal.
October has been confirmed as the timeframe for the next Nexus devices, and Google looks to have not only an LG Nexus 2015 but also a Huawei Nexus available for Android consumers. The Nexus 6, made by Google and Motorola and announced last Fall, featured a 6-inch screen and $649 price tag that turned off customers who’ve been used to $349 price tags for Google’s latest. Since that time, Google has also launched its own wireless service known as Project Fi, which gives cheap and affordable phone and data plans to Nexus 6 owners who don’t mind living on T-Mobile and Sprint networks.
Android 6.0 Marshmallow has been announced as bringing Doze, a feature that allows your phone to sip battery when not in use (instead of hogging it), USB Type-C support, native fingerprint support, a new Do Not Disturb Mode, Quick Toggles, Themes engine, individual app permissions, and more.
