Microsoft’s Lumia 640 was one of the handsets that the software giant unveiled during the start of the Mobile World Congress event that was held in Barcelona. Now, the affordable smartphone is going to be one of the first devices to receive the company’s highly anticipated Windows 10 update, announced in a video by Microsoft’s Scandinavian General Manager Ossi Korpela. According to a source, Windows Phone 8.1 currently does not support USB OTG out of the box even though it uses the same microUSB port as Android smartphones. While Microsoft has not confirmed the following, it is possible that Windows 10 will finally bring compatibility for USB OTG.
Additionally, if Lumia 640 is able to receive the Windows 10 upgrade, then it will definitely be receiving the company’s Redstone update, which is expected to arrive in two parts. The first part will be arriving in June 2016, while the remaining one will be released in October 2016. Lumia 640 was released by Microsoft in order to target the middle smartphone market. The company has been making waves by targeting the lower-end markets with affordable devices such as its $70 Lumia 430, although it has been rumored to be working on two flagship Windows Phones. Both smartphones are expected feature top-notch hardware specifications, a QHD resolution,and a Windows 10 platform straight ‘out of the box’.
As for the hardware specifications of Lumia 640, the smartphone comes with a 5 inch screen that radiates the 720p display. Since the handset will cater to the middle smartphone market, it is running Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 400 SoC, which features a quad-core 1.2 GHz Cortex-A7 processor, 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB of on-board memory (with an expandable storage slot with a limit of up to 128 GB), an 802.11 n wireless adapter and an LTE Cat 4 modem for connecting to wireless carrier networks. As for the pricing details, 3G model is available for $155 while the LTE model is available for $178.
