The Galaxy Note 5 has lost some of its shine due to the recently-announced Galaxy Note 7, but the device is still one of the best on the market today — and the unlocked Galaxy Note 5 is an even bigger appeal because it isn’t tied to a carrier as is the case with my Verizon Galaxy Note 5.

The unlocked Galaxy Note 5 as well as all carrier versions features a 5.7-inch, Quad HD display with a 2,560 x 1,440p screen resolution, an octa-core, Samsung Exynos 7420 SoC (processor), 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM (the RAM is also supplied by Samsung), 32GB of internal storage, a 5MP front camera with f/1.9 aperture, a 16MP back camera with optical image stabilization (OIS), video digital image stabilization (VDIS), and a 3,000mAh battery. The Galaxy Note 5 turned heads when it was announced near the end of 2015, with the device being the first Galaxy Note smartphone to feature a glass and metal build quality that stepped up the game for a device that, prior to the Note 5, had only been known for its productivity.
Samsung brought some features to the unlocked Galaxy Note 5 (and its locked carrier versions) that set it apart from its predecessors. First, Samsung incorporated a new feature called Off Screen Memo that lets you write with the S Pen when you put the display in standby mode (and the display is black). Additionally, Samsung also provided a Keyboard Cover for the Galaxy Note 5 (the first Galaxy Note to get a proprietary keyboard cover) as well as in-built wireless charging (the Note 5 was the first Galaxy Note to get this, too). Wireless charging allows you to place your device on a charging pad that then charges the device; the charging pad is connected to the wall though, not your phone. When the device charges to 100% on the charging pad, you can remove it without having to disconnect the phone from a USB cable, first.
The Galaxy Note 5’s Exynos 7420 was the top-performing processor in the smartphone market for 2015, and the Exynos 8890 processor in the international (non-US and non-China) variant of the device will set the benchmark for 2016 smartphone performance.
