Apple iPhone 6s, 6s Plus release date set for September 9th

It’s getting to be that time for Apple, when the company announces its latest and greatest smartphones annually. The month in which the company announces its newest iPhones has been September for a long time, and this year’s announcement is right on schedule with what we’ve come to expect from Cupertino.

According to sources familiar with the matter, Apple will announce the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus on Wednesday, September 9th, approximately one month after Samsung announces its Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6 edge+, and a mysterious third item (we think it’s an Edge tablet). The event will consist of the iPhone 6s and the iPhablet, the iPhone 6s Plus.

So far, we’ve seen that Apple will likely use most of the same inner components as the company used in the iPhone 6, with few changes under the hood. This doesn’t mean that Apple won’t enhance the experience, some, though, with Force Touch (having debuted on the company’s newest MacBook) making its way to the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus.

Apple’s entrance into the phablet arena last year was a step forward for the company that has spent the last few years watching the market’s response to Samsung’s phablets (wide-screen displays). The iPhone 6s Plus will likely retain the same 5.5-inch Retina display that is currently in the iPhone 6 Plus. One difference between the iPhone 6 Plus and the iPhone 6s Plus concerns the camera. Apple retained an 8MP iSight camera on the 6 Plus, but the company may decide to upgrade the back camera sensor from 8MP to 12 or 13MP.

The iPhone 6c is rumored to make an appearance into the Apple lineup in 2016, but this year will see no such smartphone. After all, with the iPhone 6 and iPhone 5s getting price cuts, and with the metal builds behind the company’s last two generations of smartphones, consumers see no reason to pick the polycarbonate plastic iPhone over its metal “siblings.”

Apple will also introduce iOS 9 with the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, which looks to optimize the iOS experience and squash Wi-Fi and Bluetooth bugs. Apple has announced that all iOS 8-updateable gadgets will receive the iOS 9 update, which has been said by Cupertino to only consume about 2GB of storage as opposed to the 6GB size of the iOS 8 update.

The iPhone 6s will retail for the same price as the iPhone 6: $649 for the 16GB model and $749 for the 64GB version. The iPhone 6 Plus started at $749 for the 16GB model and $849 for the 64GB model. There are 128GB storage models for purchase as well (around $949). Apple’s latest move was to abandon two-year agreements at Apple retail stores with AT&T customers. AT&T recently killed two-year agreements in favor of its early upgrade NEXT plan, and Verizon just killed its two-year agreements and “Edge” plans yesterday in favor of monthly installment plans.
