Norman Reedus (TV’s Daryl from The Walking Dead) to star in New Silent Hill Video Game
The first real bit of exciting news is finally starting to trickle out of Gamescom in Germany where Sony announced a dream collaboration between video game legend Hideo Kojima, Hollywood heavyweight Guillermo Del Toro, and one of TV’s newest darlings Norman Reedus. Norman Reedus is best known as fan favorite Daryl Dixon on AMC’s smash hit The Walking Dead. Given Reedus’ talent taking out “Walkers” on The Walking Dead, it was only natural that Kojuma and Del Toro made him their resounding pick for the latest installment of Silent Hill. For those of you who aren’t real gamers, Silent Hill was one of the first legitimately fantastic entries in the Horor Genre video game library.
Silent Hill was, along with Resident Evil, the only games that would fill me with literal dread when playing alone. Challenges to myself to play the game alone, in the dark would not often last long when I was younger and while Resident Evil was plenty scary, Silent Hill was just on another level. With Resident Evil you’d get past the BOO part and feel relatively safe for a little while until the game started to ratchet up the tension again. With Silent Hill… you just never knew what was going to happen. You’d walk through utterly desolate streets for hours at a time, with not one single encounter to speak off. As you collected clues throughout the abandoned town you never felt safe, nothing has happened in 30 minutes, something will surely jump out at me around the corner. But it never came until you least expected it and then it would get you good! You’d be pulled off for a half hour of frenzied activity, fleeing for your life! Terrified at every turn! Then, silence again… but with the silence, a general malaise… you never felt safe.
As a huge fan of both the Walking Dead and Silent Hill I was ecstatic to hear about this trio made in Heaven! In the teaser trailer that Sony unveiled (available below) we can see a lone figure wandering eerily familiar abandoned streets. When his face is finally revealed we see the familiar face of Norman Reedus come into focus. Hideo Kojima was interviewed back in 2012 and had this to say about his vision for Silent Hill, “Silent Hill is in closed room setting and doesn’t require full action so that we can focus on the graphic quality. Enemy doesn’t have to be a lot or move fast. It only requires scariness by graphics and presentation. As being a creator making action game in open world, such game is very enviously attractive.”
I wait with bated breath!
