Google releases OTA Security update for the Nexus 6P, 5X, and other current Nexus devices

Google has promised security updates for its Nexus devices, and the search engine giant has delivered through Fall 2015. Now, Google is back to deliver the January 2016 security patch for its Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6, Nexus 5, and Nexus 7 devices. Here’s the official word from Google on the Nexus Security Bulletin:

“We have released a security update to Nexus devices through an over-the-air (OTA) update as part of our Android Security Bulletin Monthly Release process. The Nexus firmware images have also been released to the Google Developer site. Builds LMY49For later and Android 6.0 with Security Patch Level of January 1, 2016 or later address these issues…partners were notified about and provided updates for the issues described in this bulletin on December 7, 2015 or earlier…the most severe of these issues is a Critical security vulnerability that could enable remote code execution on an affected device through multiple methods such as email, web browsing, and MMS when processing media files.”

Google started issuing monthly security updates due to the Stagefright vulnerability available on Android devices. While Google issued the update for its Nexus devices, other Android manufacturers must provide the security patch for their devices. If you own an LG, Samsung, Sony, HTC, or even Motorola device (or one of the minor players such as Acer, for example), you’ll need to check with your manufacturer to discover when you can expect security patches from them.
