Lumia 950 XL Surface Pen support “coming,” says Microsoft Mobile representative

Microsoft announced its new Lumia 950 XL and Lumia 950 earlier this week, but surprisingly, there was no mention of the Surface Pen with the two new smartphones (only the Surface Pro 4 tablet). Rumors swirled prior to the announcement that there would be Surface Pen support for at least the Lumia 950 XL, but no such luck. That doesn’t mean that the Surface Pen won’t be coming to the new Lumia smartphone down the line.

The statement comes from Twitter member @Nawzil10, who works for Microsoft Mobile. Nawzil was asked earlier this week about Surface Pen support for the Lumia 950 XL from fellow Twitter member Tamer Nader @tnadera. The conversation progressed along these lines:

@tnadera: @Nawzil10 no support for surface pen for #lumia950xl??

@Nawzil10: @tnadera it was not mentioned during the event.

@tnadera: @Nawzil10 yes I know but it was rumored before the event. Was it not true or cancelled or postponed?? Any ideas??

@Nawzil10: @tnadera coming.

Nawzil’s last statement, “coming,” shows that while Surface Pen support hasn’t yet arrived, Microsoft seems to have Surface Pen support plans for the Lumia 950 XL. At the same time, however, Nawzil tells Twitter followers that his words are his own and not the views of Microsoft, but working for the company, he’d know a thing or two about upcoming plans. And representatives whose words don’t come true are discounted as authority sources in the court of public opinion, so we can assume he’s giving some insight into future plans – which means that Surface Pen support will come to the Lumia 950 XL down the line.

Nawzil was asked about whether or not the Lumia 950 will get Surface Pen support, but nothing was said along those lines. For now, Lumia 950 interested buyers shouldn’t expect Surface Pen support for the smaller and more cost-friendly model.

At this point, however, it could be the case that Microsoft will craft a high-end device with the Surface Pen, pricing it above the Lumia 950 XL and Lumia 950 (which are really just two different sizes of Microsoft’s new lineup, both having the same Windows 10 software).

If Surface Pen support does come to the Lumia 950 XL, AT&T customers will get first dibs with carriers. For those who don’t care to deal with AT&T, Microsoft says it will sell both the Lumia 950 XL and the Lumia 950 at its own website.
