iPhone Duo! Worth It?

Apple spent eight years watching everyone else fold their phones in half. Samsung did it. Google did it. Huawei did it twice over. Apple just sat there, arms crossed, waiting for the category to grow up. Then on September 9, it walked on stage and dropped the iPhone Duo like it had invented the whole idea.

And honestly? The thing looks good. It also costs $1,999, which is the part nobody can quite get past. So let’s skip the hype and talk about whether you should actually buy one.

What $1,999 Actually Buys You

Apple skipped the tall, skinny foldable shape and went passport-style instead. You get a 5.4-inch outer screen and a 7.6-inch inner one, both OLED at 120Hz, per Apple’s own announcement.

Closed, the outer display still gives you 90% of the screen area of an iPhone 18 Pro. Opened, it’s the thinnest iPhone Apple has ever shipped at 5.2mm. The inner display is also 50% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max, which is a genuinely huge jump.

The Crease Situation Is Better Than Expected

This is what surprised reviewers most. The Wall Street Journal’s Joanna Stern said she saw no visible crease at all, even while bending the device, MacDailyNews reported from her hands-on.

She compared it directly against the Galaxy Z Fold 8, where the crease is obvious. Apple credits its matte nano-texture finish for hiding the fold. MacRumors called it “still there, but barely,” while AppleInsider found only a slight dip, IBTimes noted. That’s a strong showing for a first attempt.

Now, The Bad News

There’s no telephoto lens. Zoom runs on digital cropping up to 10x instead, which Geeky Gadgets flags as a real limit for anyone serious about photos. Stern called the missing telephoto the biggest hardware disappointment of the whole package.

Face ID is also gone entirely. Touch ID now lives in the side button and works folded or unfolded, but years of muscle memory go out the window. For a $2,000 phone, those are strange things to give up.

It’s Heavy, And You’ll Feel It

Folded, the Duo weighs 254 grams and measures 11.3mm thick. That’s a brick compared to a normal iPhone. The Wall Street Journal’s Nicole Nguyen wrote that the weight and width make one-handed use and typing difficult in phone mode, IBTimes reported.

Jefferies analyst Edison Lee raised the same concern, warning that this size may not be what buyers actually want, Yahoo Finance noted. If you have smaller hands, try one before you buy.

Nobody Has Actually Lived With It Yet

Here’s the thing every review keeps circling back to. The Duo hasn’t been in anyone’s pocket for more than a few days. There’s no data on hinge wear after a year of folding.

Nobody knows how the battery degrades under real dual-screen use, or whether that invisible crease stays invisible. Samsung and Google have years of ownership data behind their foldables, Robb Sutton points out. Apple has a keynote and a handful of demo units.

There’s Also A Second-Gen Rumor

This one might matter more than anything above. Jefferies’ supply chain checks suggest Apple plans a second-generation foldable next year in a more normal size, Yahoo Finance reported.

That would make the Duo a potential one-off model. It could also arrive at an even higher price. Either way, it’s a reason some buyers will sit this round out.

So Who Should Buy It?

The Duo makes sense if that big inner screen changes your actual day. Think people who read constantly, run two apps side by side, or edit on the go. Travelers who want to ditch the tablet fit too, especially with Apple Pencil support coming later this year.

But if you’re buying it hoping for a camera upgrade, save your money. MacObserver put it bluntly: the Duo is worth it only if the 7.6-inch display changes what you do all day, and it’s poor value as a camera. That fold costs exactly $700 more than the cheapest iPhone 18 Pro Max.

Alt Çizgi

Apple built a polished first-generation foldable, and that’s genuinely impressive for a debut in a crowded category. But polished and proven are two different things.

The trade-offs are real: no telephoto, no Face ID, 254 grams, and zero long-term track record. If that inner screen solves a problem you actually have today, go for it. If you’re just curious, waiting until real reviews land after October 23 costs you nothing at all.
