Apple’s annual iPhone updates often focus on incremental improvements, but early reports suggest the iPhone 18 Pro could be different. Rumored upgrades include Apple’s first 2nm smartphone chip, a variable aperture camera system, a smaller Dynamic Island, and a new-generation modem designed to improve both speed and efficiency.

While Apple has yet to confirm any details, the leaks so far point to one of the most substantial hardware refreshes the Pro lineup has seen in years. 

Here are the five biggest upgrades currently expected for the iPhone 18 Pro ahead of its anticipated September launch.

1. A20 Pro Chip Moves to 2nm

Apple is expected to build the A20 Pro on TSMC’s first-generation 2nm process compared to the 3nm node used in the current A19 Pro. That’s a meaningful step down in transistor size. 

Analysts point to roughly 15% faster performance and 30% better power efficiency as likely outcomes. For users, that could mean snappier AI features and noticeably longer battery life, without any change in screen size.

2. Variable Aperture Camera Arrives

One of the most frequently reported upgrades is a variable aperture main camera, which would be a first for the iPhone. 

This would give users control over depth of field: a shallow setting to isolate a subject, a medium setting for partial background blur, or a deep setting to keep everything in focus. Competing Android flagships have offered variable aperture for years. Apple appears set to finally adopt it. 

3. Dynamic Island Gets Smaller

Reports suggest Apple could shrink the Dynamic Island by moving more Face ID components beneath the display. PhoneArena suggests the cutout could shrink by close to 50%, though that figure hasn’t been independently confirmed. 

The change would make the front display feel more expansive. An image of an alleged iPhone 18 Pro prototype shows a smaller Dynamic Island with a Face ID sensor appearing to sit under the display. 

4. Apple’s C2 Modem Adds mmWave 5G

Apple’s C2 modem is expected to bring faster speeds, improved power efficiency, and support for mmWave 5G in the United States. That feature is missing from Apple’s current C1 and C1X modem chips.  

Reports also suggest the C2 modem may support 5G satellite connectivity through NR-NTN. If true, users could access basic internet services even outside traditional cellular coverage, making the feature especially useful for travelers and people in remote areas. 

5. LTPO+ Display Technology

Apple is rumored to equip the iPhone 18 Pro lineup with LTPO+ display technology. It should contribute to longer battery life by enabling the screen to manage its refresh rate more efficiently. 

This works alongside the A20 Pro’s efficiency improvements. The two changes could push battery endurance noticeably beyond what the iPhone 17 Pro delivered.

Why This Cycle May Matter

Apple is also changing its release strategy in 2026, releasing only the Pro models in September, while the standard iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e won’t arrive until spring 2027. That puts the entire weight of Apple’s fall launch on the Pro lineup. 

If current leaks prove accurate, the iPhone 18 Pro could become Apple’s most significant upgrade in several years. With a redesigned camera system, a more efficient chip, and a refined display, the Pro lineup may give longtime iPhone users a compelling reason to upgrade.
