How to Hard Reset or Reboot Any Android Phone or Tablet

Just like any other technology, Android phones and tablets could also be worn out and act out when they are left turned on for long periods of time. The reason behind this is due to the apps running in the background which could take up a lot of memory and space. This means that the amount of resources would be limited.

One way to solve the mentioned situation is by restarting your device. As your device turns off and on, your memory would be cleared and your device would restart into a fresh slate. Though this is a great way to solve the issue, unfortunately, there are times when it would not work. In fact, your device might even refuse to restart at all. When this happens, you would need to do a hard reboot.

How to Hard Reset or Reboot Android Phone or Tablet

Perform A System Reboot

If your Android phone or tablet is randomly crashing, then, it might be the time that you would need to reboot your Android device. To perform a system reboot, you would need to press and hold the power button for a few seconds. If your device is a biometric type of phone, you would find the button on the back. Once you see the options to power off or restart. your device will automatically turn off your phone or tablet and you would need to turn it back on again.

Perform a Hard Reboot

If the first method does not work and your phone froze, then, you would need to perform a hard reboot. Do not confuse this method with factory reset method. In fact, performing a hard reboot is simpler and easier to do.

  • Press and hold the power button for about 20 to 30 seconds or hold down both power and volume up buttons
  • Once the device shuts down, restart your Android device as normal

Remove the Battery

If your Android device wont reboot, you would need to remove its power and force shut down. The reason behind this is due to your device’s operating system has locked up. Remove the battery and put it back. Restart your device. If you are using a tablet, you would not be able to remove the battery. In this case, you will have to wait for its battery to drain and recharge it and restart your tablet.

Perform a Factory Reset

If the above methods do not work for you, then, the last resort would be doing a factory reset. By doing a factory reset, you could solve and remove apps that are corrupting your system files.

When doing a factory reset, keep in mind that your phone would go back to its default settings. This means, your phone would be at the same state as when you have first purchased it. Do not worry as your data such as contacts, emails, photos, settings could be stored to cloud.

  • Charge your battery at least 75 percent
  • Go to the settings menu
  • Click backup and reset
  • Select factory data reset

If you get stuck and your device wont boot up, do not worry as you will be able to access your device’s recovery mode.

  • Turn on your phone and hold down the volume up button at the same time until the logo appears
  • Through the volume buttons, scroll to Recovery option
  • Press the power button
  • If you only have no command option, press and hold the power button and volume up again
  • Use the volume down button to scroll down.
  • Select Wipe data/factory reset option

Some phones which have a physical home button, you would need to press the volume up, power and home button simultaneously. Once the phone vibrates, release the poser button. You would feel the phone vibrate again and menu would appear. When this happens, follow the instructions as mentioned above.

What if My Phone is Bricked?

If your phone is bricked, this means your phone would be non-responsive to any commands. If your phone is soft bricked then, you still have a chance to fix it. However, if your phone is a hard bricked device, then it would become useless as your device would no longer turn on. Soft bricked device, however, would still partially start up and would be constantly rebooting until it crashes or when you try to use an app or make a phone call. If this happens, we highly recommend for you to flash your device and install a clean copy of your Android.

Closing Apps

If you experience some troubles with your phone or tablet, all you need to do is to close down some of your apps. This way your memory space would free up.

  • Open your app menu
  • Close those apps that are open by clicking close all
  • You could also go to your phone’s task manager and you would see what apps are open. Select the apps that you would wish to close.

We hope that through this article, you were able to find useful information about resetting and rebooting your Android Phone and/or tablet.
