Apple announced the iPhone SE today at Infinite Loop (we think this was the meaning of “let us loop you in,” though we can’t confirm for certain), and the device offered much of what we’d assumed it would. There were really few surprises with the 4-inch iPhone, with Apple offering it because so many individuals last year purchased the iPhone 5s (according to Apple, the number was around 30 million).
The iPhone SE offers the smaller display size factor that many customers have wanted, with some current specs such as 4K video recording and Apple’s 12MP camera. At the same time, however, there is no 3D Touch on board (meaning that Apple is creating more fragmentation into its lineup, a word that was once used with reference to Android and its update schedule), and the Touch ID used was first-generation tech, not second-generation tech as found in the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus.
Apple stunned nearly everyone by introducing the iPhone SE with a price tag of $399 for the 16GB model and $499 for the 64GB model (again, no 32GB for the middlers). Keep in mind, too, that there is no optical image stabilization (OIS) on the new iPhone, so you’re still going to get some shaking in photos and some photo blurriness that often accompanies normal human photo capturing. You will get iOS 9.3, which Apple has made available for consumers today, but the iPhone SE won’t be available for pre-order until March 24th (this Thursday). The iPhone SE will go on sale worldwide on next Thursday, March 31st, with the US, China, and other countries getting the device first (then others will follow).
For those who don’t want to pay $399 or $499 outright for the iPhone SE, Apple says it intends to offer the device for $0 down with a two-year agreement, or $17 a month on an installment plan.
