LG G5 could come with full metal unibody design

LG has been having, as usual, a less-than-stellar year. If you’ve been paying attention to the tech world for the last few years, LG’s downfall isn’t exactly a surprise. The Korean manufacturer has had some measure of success in its TVs, and even some of its Android Wear smartwatches (though Motorola has frustrated its success in this), but the company just can’t keep the pace with its fellow Seoul “sibling” Samsung in the smartphone space. Each year, when LG releases a smartphone, it’s always compared to Samsung’s Galaxy S lineup — and found wanting.

A new rumor says that LG intends to go with a full metal unibody design for the LG G5 in 2016. The company has used metal in its devices before, with the LG V10 being the latest smartphone to bear some metal composition with its metal frame. The company decided to market its stellar 16MP back camera with its f/1.8 camera aperture in the LG G4 and, though it is every bit as good as LG has hyped it to be, still doesn’t quite dethrone Samsung’s 2015 smartphone arsenal. Some say that LG’s lack of success with the LG G4 (disappointing sales, to say the least) will motivate the company to proceed with a new smartphone hardware design and feel in 2016.

The LG G5 could maintain the same 8MP front camera and 16MP back camera as the LG G4, with the same amount of 3GB of RAM and 3,000mAh battery. We’d like to see LG use a larger battery size in the LG G5 (or better optimize the one it has to bring increased battery endurance), and we’d like to see the 2016 smartphone come with the same 64GB of storage pre-installed as that of the company’s latest smartphone, the V10. LG has said that the V10 is a new series for the company, so the company’s LG G5 next year could look more and more like the new series. With the G5 predecessor, LG utilized the mid-range, Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor, leading some tech reviewers to assume that the company’s G line may in fact transition from an assumed high-end collection to a mid-end — leaving the V10 as the new prestigious lineup for LG.

LG is looking at the market with watchful eyes for the LG G5 release, as it will have to compete with Samsung’s Galaxy S7 and S7 edge when these two smartphones are announced in a few months. Samsung has hit the door running, with the Korean giant stating that its new smartphones will be announced in February (hinting at a March release, as opposed to a mid-April release this year). This means that Samsung’s Galaxy S7 devices will have three months of freedom and customer purchases before the LG G5 makes its debut.
