Samsung reportedly working on a circular smartwatch with cellular connectivity
Samsung is said to be working on a new type of smartwatch that could feature a circular screen and cellular connectivity. Samsung has been working on many new wearable devices for quite some time and it is said that the above mentioned Gear smartwatch with cellular connectivity is among them. Samsung has already shown how serious a contender it is in wearable tech by announcing the Gear VR, a virtual reality headset.
According to Sammobile, Samsung will be launching the Gear VR and the SIM enabled Gear smartwatch alongside the Galaxy Note 4; at their September 4 event next month. This is not the first time that the concept of a Samsung cellular smartwatch has made it to the news. A few weeks ago there were some leaked images that showed rendered design mockups for the upcoming circular smartwatch with cellular connectivity.
Samsung obviously took some design hints from the Motorola Moto 360 which also features a rounded display similar to a traditional wristwatch. A lot of critics have admired the design of the Moto 360; which runs on Android Wear. Besides that, LG has also announced its first smartwatch that is also going to be a round. The trend has shifted radically towards circular smartwatches which more closely resemble traditional wristwatches. It seems that companies have caught on to the fact that users want something with traditional appeal, along with all the functionality you’d expect from a smart device.
It is still unknown whether Samsung will opt for Google’s Android Wear or go with its own Tizen OS but the chances are that they will opt for Android Wear. Android wear already provides many features specifically designed for smartwatches while the Tizen OS would have to be optimized for smartwatches. Samsung’s IFA event in Berlin just just a week away and it is possible that Samsung could unveil its new timepiece then.
