After buying a new iPhone, one of the first things that you will need to do is to transfer all your data (including contacts, photos, videos and messages) from your old device. You can transfer the data using iCloud or iTunes and in this guide, we’ll take through the process to ensure that you can transfer data from your previous iPhone to the new one in just a few minutes.
Backup the data in your old iPhone
The first step to transfer data between the devices is to create a backup of your previous iPhone. You can use iCloud or iTunes for this purpose and below, you will find the instructions that will allow you to back up your iPad. or your iPhone using any of these methods.
iCloud
- To backup your iOS device using iCloud, start by connecting to a WiFi network and then tap Settings. Scroll down and select iCloud.
- Scroll down to Backup and tap on it. Check that iCloud Backup is enabled.
- Tap Back Up Now and make sure that your internet remains active while the process is being completed.
- When the backup is completed, tap Settings, then iCloud, followed by Storage and Manage Storage. Select your device and you should see the backup along with the time and backup size.
iTunes
- Go to iTunes and connect your iPhone or iPad to your computer
- You may get a message asking you for your passcode or to trust the computer. Here you just need to follow the steps that appear on the screen.
- Select your iOS device once it is listed in iTunes.
- Click Back Up Now.
Once the process has been completed, you will be able to check if the backup was completed by going to iTunes Preferences and then Devices. If you are a Windows user, select Edit and then Devices from the menu bar that appears at the top of the window. Now you will see the name of your device, along with the date and time on which the backup was created.
Transfer iPhone data with iCloud backup
Once you have created an iCloud backup of your old device, you will be able to recover it and restore it on the new iPhone that you want to use. Just keep in mind that you need to be connected to a Wi-Fi network to be able to restore from iCloud. Then, you can follow these steps:
- Make sure that your new iPhone is ON and then set it up by sliding your finger along the bottom.
- After a few on-screen prompts that you need to follow, you will get to a screen that says Welcome to your New iPhone. There, you can select Restore from iCloud backup.
- When prompted, enter your iCloud ID. Users who have two factor authentication will be asked to verify their account.
- If the email you use to buy content from iTunes and apps is different from the one you use for iCloud backup, it is likely that they ask you to enter other iTunes passwords associated to your account.
- Continue following the prompts, including setting up a passcode and Touch ID. Then allow some time for iCloud to retrieve your data. The time to complete the backup depends on how large is the backup. As soon as all the settings are retrieved and you iPhone is ready for use, you can disconnect from the Wi-Fi network. Whenever you connect again, iCloud will keep on backing up from where it left off.
Transfer iPhone data with iTunes
If the backup in your old phone was created in iTunes, you can follow the below steps:
- Connect your new iPhone to your computer and launch iTunes
- Click the device icon, which you will find at the upper left-side.
- You’ll be asked if you want to set up as a new device or restore from a backup. Here, you need to select the backup option, making sure that your most recent backup is selected. If you are using a shared computer, check that you are selecting your own backup.
- Once you have confirmed that you have chosen the right backup, click Continue. Allow some time for iTunes to complete the process. Don’t disconnect your iOS device until iTunes confirms that the backup is finished
