Verizon releases security patch for the Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6 edge+

Google has committed to monthly security updates, with the Nexus 5, Nexus 6, and Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X already having the last Stagefright security update for December. Some high-end smartphones in the Android world have yet to receive the November security update, and carriers have yet to update their devices to take advantage of it. T-Mobile has updated the Galaxy Note 5 already, but Verizon had yet to do so until just a few days ago when it released the November security update for the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+.

Verizon Galaxy Note 5 security update

Verizon’s security update for the Galaxy Note 5 and S6 edge+ brings the software build number to LMY47X (specifically, 2OJ3) and only brings the Android security patch for Stagefright. Keep in mind that this is not the December security patch; only Nexus devices seem to have that for now. The Android security patch level says “2015-11-01,” referring to that issued on November 1st from Google — which is now over 7 weeks old. In other words, Samsung’s latest smartphones are still weeks behind in their security patches while Nexus devices straight from Google already have the latest update. Samsung isn’t to blame, as Google owns Android and can decide when its devices get security patches (such as the monthly update schedule). Even HTC has said that it expects it won’t be able to keep up with Google in this regard because Android OEMs are working on security patches and new updates at the same time. Google released Android 6.0 Marshmallow on October 5th, but has already released Android 6.0.1 (with over 200 new emoji) while planning to release an Android 6.1 update. It’s said that Google won’t release it until next summer, but the presence of an HTC Perfume device makes it unlikely that Google will wait that long (though the company could always surprise us).

Have you received your security patch for the Verizon Galaxy Note 5 or Galaxy S6 edge+? If so, feel free to let us know in the comments below.
