How to find out which generation Apple TV you have

Apple TV was originally launched in 2007 and 4 generations have been made available throughout the history of this digital media player. The latest generation of Apple TV was released in 2015 and it is currently the main option supported. The original version of Apple TV is no longer working as it was declared as obsolete at the end of 2015. While the second and third generation were taken off the shelves when the 4th generation was introduced, many users would still have these devices. Apple is prompting customers to get the most recent option available and while the hardware hasn’t been updated in almost two years, in 2016, tvOS 10 was released. This software upgrade for Apple TV brings a large selection of features for the 4th Generation of Apple TV, including single sign-on, a new remote app, HomeKit support and dark mode. Apple TV 1

Although this Generation is no longer functional, it is worth checking what it offered. It was grey or silver and about 8-inch square. The processor was 1 GHz Intel “Crofton” Pentium M. It came with Nvidia GeForce Go 7300 with 64 MB of VRAM. It used 40 or 160 GB hard disk with USB 2.0.

Apple TV 2

Apple TV 2 was originally launched in 2010. It is black and about 4-inch square. It only offers 720p resolution.

Like Apple TV 2, Apple TV 3 is black and it is around 4-inch square. It offers 1080p resolution. You can find the resolution in the box, or go to Settings, then Audio and Video and select TV resolution to check this information.

  • Graphics Card: Apple A5 (PowerVR SGX543MP2)
  • Memory: 512 MN RAM
  • 8 GB of storage

Apple TV 4

It is black and almost 4 inches square in size.

  • Processor: A8 chip with 64-bit architecture
  • Model No: A1625 – AppleTV5, 3 – MGY52LL/A
  • Graphics Card: Apple A8 (PowerVR Series 6XT GX6450)
  • Memory: 2 GB LPDDR3
  • Storage: You can choose between 32GB and 64GB of storage
